Stay at the Astor for a taste of Tianjin past.
TianjinKennedy
Tianjin, China | Sep 25, 2025 | Trip type: CouplesMy wife and I have stayed at the Astor several times over the past five years and really enjoy the hotel. I appreciate the historicity of the hotel. We have only stayed in the historic wing, so this review is limited to our stay in that part only. The Astor has a museum in the basement and it chronicles some of Tianjin's history as seen through the eyes of the Astor hotel. You will receive a nice collectible style museum ticket upon check-in. It is worth your time to check it out.
As far as the check-in goes, we have never had any problems and have had great customer service. We always book a room in the historic wing and request the patio. These rooms face the local park and the Ritz Carlton hotel. The Ritz looks down on the Astor, literally. At night, it is pretty cool to see the looming hotel across the street. We like the comfort of the Astor and the feel of the rooms. When the hotel was renovated, great care was taken to preserve the things of the past while upgrading modern conveniences.
When talking to housekeeping, it helped us to have a little Mandarin to communicate for extra blankets or pillows. The hotel is located down the street from JiWan Plaza which is across the street from the Tianjin train station. While it is true that there is nothing directly around the Astor, you can find a shopping mall in either direction if you walk a few blocks. Since this hotel is centrally located, you can be driven to major shopping areas in less than 10 minutes.
My wife and I take get away weekends there and will be taking advantage of one of the specials that are offered. As far as Food and Beverage are concerned, we don't have much experience with the one restaurant other than the breakfast buffet. The buffet leans toward Tianjin tastes, not so much western, and is comparable to many other kinds of breakfast buffets in Tianjin. We would not pay for it separately but will take advantage of deals where it is included in a reduced price. O'Hara's pub, located on the first floor, has a nice atmosphere, not too many seating choices, so we skipped it. If you are a bar enthusiast, you should check it out. I believe they have a jazz singer a few times a week there. We have yet to use the exercise equipment or pool, so we cannot help you there. We have attended murder mystery parties (special events) and must say that the FNB were excellent, very well done. Again, our bias is, is that we are foreigners who have lived in Tianjin for the past five years and we would rate the Astor as our number one getaway hotel for Tianjin. -
Treated like royalty

Ottawa, Canada | Aug 27, 2025 | Trip type: FamilyStaff at the Astor took service to a whole new level. They were amazing, attentive and always went an extra two miles for us. I have never been so impressed with customer service.
The rooms were large, very comfortable with good sitting space and great lighting, however there was a certain lack of attention to detail from the housekeeping and maintenance staff. Air Conditioning wasn't working and the repair man didn't seem too bothered (front of house offered to move us immediately). Rooms, even after house keeping, would often miss something like a second hand towel, a mug, a clean glass.
Location wise, the hotel isn't too close to anything so taxi's are a must to get around, but the concierge was always willing to flag one down for us and let them know where we wanted to go. They also always checked that we had the hotel's name in Chinese to get back.
Despite the small housekeeping misses, I would stay here in a heart beat. It is a beautiful space and the staff always make you feel welcome. Really did feel like royalty! -
Amazing Luxury, but no tourist destination
Gretchen H
Clear Lake, Minnesota | Aug 20, 2025 | Trip type: BusinessStayed here on a work visit. The hotel is amazing, the other reviews indicate that. This hotel is in the financial district and there is very little to do in the area. There is a mall out the back door and 3 blocks down. The mall has a little grocery in the basement that sells great produce, snacks, wine, beer, and other necessities. The mall also has a modified drug store across from the grocery. A nice workout facility and ok pool. The pool area has a larger hot tub, but the pool is really just 2 endless pools that would typically be used for swimming "laps".
The restaurants are ok, we ate at the traditional dining room and the asia restaurant up stairs. We also had brunch each day in the main dining room. All my work group made reservations together and some had brunch included and others did not, but we all paid the same rate, so do make sure you ask the question at check in. Saturday or sunday mornings (I can't remember) there is champagne at the breakfast buffet that is included in the cost (well maybe if it is included in the room charge, but that is dicey). Staff was friendly enough, English is not spoken fluently by all. We did have to assist the bartender (very sweet young girl) in the pub to get us gin and tonic. Took about 10 minutes to get the ice, lime, gin and tonic, but she was very sweet and was trying hard to get it right. My room was amazing, it was in the newer section and I was upgraded to a mini suite. I was there 10 days and loved my walk in closet, refrigerator and lovely shower. Lived in luxury and it was great. But, there is very little to do in the area Do not book here if you want to be a "tourist". -
Graceful hotel - Nice Place, Nice People !

London, United Kingdom | Aug 18, 2025 | Trip type: CouplesI spend my business life in hotels where the rooms are like boxes, and sometimes I could be anywhere in the world. On local recommendation we stayed in the Astor which is full of history and grace, where we were able to celebrate our Wedding anniversary. It was a great decision.
The Victorian Lounge is charming, the room spacious, the staff friendly and helpful. O'Hara's Bar with its wonderful chanteuse transported us back to a more elegant era. Don't miss cocktails when she is singing, it's a memorable experience.
We changed our plans and extended our stay.
Special thanks to the breakfast staff - Micheal, Alice and the team. Special thanks also to Lyn and Winner who provided a very responsive service when we had any issues, and all the front office staff.
Readers should also be aware - This hotel has two sides - the busy weekend and the quieter midweek. We enjoyed both - but this is a popular hotel at weekend, especially at breakfast time. Family friendly.
One nighters at the weekend won't see the full potential - and there is so much to see in Tianjin. I suggest you stay longer if you can and have high tea in the Victorian Lounge.
Like all old hotels there were a few wrinkles but we all show signs of age, don't we? The wrinkles added character and grace. 5/5 despite the wrinkles.
If you have time, visit the museum (free of charge to residents) and understand the story of the Astor. The story of the Astor and of Tienjin itself are interconnected. (link this if you can to a Museum trip, and learn about the Concessions)
This hotel reminded me of Raffles in Singapore. But without the peanuts on the floor of the Raffles bar. The Astor might be one of the World's greatest hotels, but a well kept secret.
In the Museum, there is a quote from one of the many dignitaries who stayed here (not sure but it might have been Herbert Hoover (before he was the 31st US President) when on his honeymoon... 'Everyone should visit this place'. I think he was probably right. -

Jun 12, 2025 | Trip type: CouplesWe only stayed for a night at this 5-star historical hotel, but enjoyed a cocktail at the O'Hara's pub before our wonderful dinner at the 1863 Bistro. After dinner, we took a stroll along the river before retiring to our old Victorian room for the night. In the morning, we visited the Astor Hotel museum to learn more about its history and learned that Emperor Pu Yi as well as many other illustrious guests once stayed there. I highly recommend the Astor for your stay in Tianjin.
