A traditional-style hotel in a good location, with modern rooms.

Beijing, China | Sep 29, 2025 | Trip type: BusinessI stayed at the Scholar's Hotel for a business conference in August. The rooms were very spacious and well-appointed, and were clearly very new.
The hotel itself is walking distance from some of Suzhou's most famous walking streets and canals, and a short taxi ride from the Humble Administrator's Garden and Suzhou Museum.
The restaurant and bar served a decent buffet breakfast, including both Western and Chinese options, and reasonably priced drinks. The atmosphere in some of the hotels many gardens and ponds was very relaxing, particularly after a full day conference. It made a welcome change from the cookie-cutter chain hotels. -
Excellent

Lund | Sep 16, 2025 | Trip type: FamilyThe hotel is located close to the pedestrian Pingjiang street and the Humble Administrators Garden. From the outside it does not look like much but the rooms are excellent in a very nice setting. The interior is classic Chinese and they put a lot of effort in to details. To mention one they had incense in the rooms and fruit. Also they had bicycles to rent, which was an excellent way to discover the city.Beds very comfortable. The only downside, the rooms are little bit dark.

Excellent location, nice breakfast, beautiful room

Dec 26, 2025We learned from someone that this is the only state run hotel in Suzhou. For a state-run hotel, it's service is very good. The rooms are very spacious and very tastefully done. It integrates traditional aesthetic with modern convenience. I especially love the wood floors throughout (no tired or dirty carpet). Lovely breakfast buffet with many local Suzhou flavors (the best of the five hotels we've stayed at so far in our China trip). The drainage system of the shower could be a bit tricky but overall it's fine.
The hotel is so conveniently located that I couldn't think of a better location than this. It is on the charming Pingjianglu, a 10-minute walk to the Suzhou Museum and the exceptional Humble Administrator's Garden, and a 5-min cab ride to Guanqianjie and a 10-min ride to Suzhou train station. -
Excellent local hotel in central location

Reston, VA | Nov 26, 2025 | Trip type: Friends getawayWe stayed at the Scholar's for 4 nights in a lovely large room. The hotel itself is small and very attractive. But what is outstanding is its location. We walked to many places, including restaurants. The one downside was the hotel's bar. Although it claimed to be a regular bar and even had a drink menu, we were unable to get a drink. Instead we had to order a bottle of wine, which we couldn't finish, so took up to our room afterwards. The service, otherwise, was excellent -- especially from the totally delightful doorman, who made sure we had a taxi that would take us to the correct train station. I've read some of the earlier reviews about bad smells, but since we didn't have that issue -- at all -- I can't comment. Our room was clean and odorless.

Close your eyes and take a deep breath... you will smell the rat which drives customers away
Sal the Fat Fish
Singapore, Singapore | Nov 21, 2025 | Trip type: BusinessI hate to admit this, I have to agree with the last reviewer of this hotel. And this is one hotel among the many which I have stayed before, which I decided to switch to another by cutting short my stay. What went terribly wrong was the smell or should I say stench in the room, especially at the toilet. Either a dead rat is rotting in the pipes of the sewerage system of the building, or the faeces being flushed down the toilet bowl are trapped in some clogged parts of the sewers and have been rotting there. I highlighted the problem to the staff, and the best they could do was to offer a change of room. Sad.
Actually, this hotel does try to be boutique style, and aspires to be as good as it touts itself to be. The decor employing chinoiserie and antique-looking furniture from the Ming or Qing dynasties is evident throughout the hotel. But the buildings seem to be from some bygone age which used to be factory workers' dormitories or maybe a school. There is a staff quarter next to the supposed posh hotel block, and the lobby / reception block tries to act as if it's the front porch of a rich man's mansion.
I must say this is a bit contrived. The gardens of Suzhou are world-famous but this vain attempt to mimic a Suzhou-style estate falters at the end of the day. The so-called garden at the front building has apparently fallen into disrepair and is a discrepit version of a normal garden. The buildings for one, as mentioned seemed inherited from a former state-owned shoe or garment factory, and the decor is not out and out posh and at some points, actually look tacky. The room given to me was good size, but the juxtaposition of modern amenities such as a sofa and a Chinese-style, rose wood chair and a metal rack for toiletries seem to make the look of the room haphazard and arbitrary. Some parts with Chinese vases and porcelain, the tea set in the room and use of chinoiserie-inspired soap trays complete with Chinese calligraphy only show the attempt to look like what it wants, but it did not look like what it wanted at the end.
Besides the overbearing stench and the unimpressive decor, I also find fault with the the bed. It was simply too low for my liking. It may jolly well be another attempt to be oriental, but it is not right at all. Chinese beds in the traditional style are latched to the side of the wall and with a curtain to draw when sleeping, and usually normal height and small in size. This is a poor re-interpretation of the Japanese tatami-inspired bedding set, and sadly it was a miserable failure in design. I did not enjoy sleeping on it at all, and the all-too-soft pillows were also another reason.
As for the service, some of the reviewers were right to say that it's subpar. I think this hotel's operator is a state-owned company, and thus the emphasis on service is not truly there. Calls to the concierge often go unanswered despite several attempts, and the requests for extra towels and front-desk at check in/out gave those drab and dull answers. The facial expression: I am not interested so you better don't ask me too many questions of which I will unlikely be able to respond to any properly. But what was most appalling was that despite hanging a DND sign on my room's door, I still got knocks from housekeeping for minor, innocuous stuff. Not that I am doing anything amorous in the room (I was concentrating on my reports to be honest) but still, I cannot accept such inconsideration to privacy as requested.
Of course, it was truly that stench in the room which drove me away from this hotel at the end of the day, cutting short my trip after the fourth day. I feel I had been very patient, but that smell did not go away; I even had to buy an air freshener myself to camouflage part of this unbearable stench. So adieu, I do not think I will come back. I have decided to switch to the Holiday Inn Jasmine, which although has no real character in decor, still promises some form of familiarity and normalcy so important to a business traveller like me.
