THIS is Shangri-la!!!
MWLing
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia | Oct 5, 2025 | Trip type: FamilyWOW can't even begin to describe this resort.....from the warm reception of the staff, the lovely & cosy rooms, the amazing views around, the food served at breakfast, and the staff at the spa who came back specially for us at 9.30pm ( we love you for that!!) - what more can you ask for? It's such a shame we only had 1 night there due to flight schedules, but that one short time & our interaction with the great staff was enough to convince us that this is the spirit of Shangri-la. We must especially thank the front desk staff who spoke excellent English & welcomed us when we arrived, & arranged for the spa staff to return for our massage appointment at 9.30 pm after our cultural show, and who saw us off the next morning - I'm so sorry I forgot her name but it's very obvious that she & the rest of the staff from bell staff & waiters & masseuse take great pride & ownership of their roles to look after us so well. Thank you all, may you all be much blessed.....& we will be back!!

VERY COMFORTABLE AND FABULOUS VIEWS TO THE MONASTERY
Dencal1945
Melbourne, Australia | Sep 29, 2025 | Trip type: CouplesThis place is beautifully sited overlooking the magnificent Songzanlin Monastery and is a hotel within the Accor Group.
The establishment comprises separate granite stone buildings each comprising four units. It seems to be styled in the ancient Tibetan style with low beds, tables and chairs.
Heavy woodwork makes the place dark. The ground are very attractive and gardens well maintained.
Heating is via either a wood stove, or an electric unit. There is no A/C and as the rooms were particularly hot when we arrived as heaters left on high all day it was difficult to cool rooms down. There being no insect screens windows tend to be kept closed and as such the room becomes very stuffy overnight. Bathroom is compact but there is shower, vanity and fully flushing toilet
Diner at the restaurant was OK. Typical local Chinese buffet with beer. Food was quite satisfactory
Double futon bed. Care needs to be taken when walking around it as the timber base protrudes outside the mattress.Runs very real risk of hitting the bed base with your shin. -
Beautiful and Absolutely Charming

Aix-les-Bains, France | Sep 14, 2025 | Trip type: Solo travelThis was a welcome treat after the disappointments of most of the other stops on my trip. The hotel is absolutely lovely, the room comfortable and quaint - it's not luxury but it's more fun than the standardized luxury of many other hotels. The restaurant had a number of delicious dishes, and the staff were helpful and generally quite fluent in English. I spent a good deal of time just sitting on my balcony enjoying the view. The hotel manager came around and spoke to many guests, making them feel at home. I had a nice long talk with him about China and the Tibetan people - the staff speak Chinese, of course, but their hearts are elsewhere. This was the high point of my trip, all in all.

A unique hotel with great view

New York | Sep 13, 2025 | Trip type: FamilyI just wrote a review for anther 5 star hotel at Shangri-la named Shangri-la Hotel where we stayed 3 nights (about $200 per night) at the end of August 2015. I also booked a suite in this hotel ($300+ per night)
We are from NY/NJ area. We travel to Europe for business and leisure almost every year. We have been in major U.S. cities through out the years. Hopefully my review can provide some insight for travelers who plan to visit this area. Here are the pros and cons:
Pro:
1) Beautiful hotel with great view. The hotel design is unique, very Tibetan style. Our suite is on the 4th floor up the hill so we could see the famed monastery. Our room also has a fire place, a nice addition.
2) The hotel has great car service to pick up and send guest to airport. The front desk called me one day before my arrival to make sure my pick up time is correct. The driver was on time for my pick up. That was very pleasant.
3) There is a sister hotel nearby where the guests can enjoy afternoon tea. It has a nice library with Chinese and English books where you could unwind and enjoy quiet reading.
4) Since we speak English, the hotel arranged free of charge an English speaking tour guide to take us to Songzanlin Monastery. Even it was raining, the gentleman was on time waiting for us at the lobby. His English is outstanding compared to staff in other hotels in China.
5) The snack bar in the mini refrigerator is complimentary (water, soda...pistachio). So is the fruit basket and the small french pastry in the hotel room.
6) The room has a humidifier which made our sleep much more comfortable. The bed is also very comfortable. The slippers in the room was so comfy my little boy wanted a new pair to take with him back to US! The staff is so nice they gave him a new pair.
Con:
1) Dirty restroom. I have a habit to examine restroom first thing after I checked in any hotel room. Right after the bell boy sent us to our room, I looked at the restroom. I was shocked how dirty the toilet was. It was not cleaned at all. This hotel received raving reviews from 900+ people. How could they give a suite to guests without cleaning it first? I was so grossed out so I called the front desk. A Tibetan cleaning lady came with a bucket with water and a brush in the water (neither looked look clean to me). After she left, I noticed the toilet seat was very wet. I had to take toilet tissue to wipe it thoroughly before I used it. The management should train their cleaning staff better and should check or at least spot check before new guests are moved in. I met one sister of the owner. I gave her my feedback because I love this hotel. She is very sincere and she said she would check it out.
2)Limited breakfast choices: local food, some salami and cheese. The salami and bread are just so so. -
One of the most relaxing hotels we have ever stayed at.
CSuzhou
Suzhou | Sep 2, 2025 | Trip type: CouplesInside or outside of China, this is one of the most relaxing hotels we have ever stayed at. From the start, Lhama (the manager) arranged our free airport pickup and the stay only got better. The location is very quiet and exactly what you expect from a chapter of Lost Horizon. The hotel is a wonderful mix of western and eastern. The service is great, and even more amazing when considering you are in western China.
Phillip and his team helped us have a very relaxing and enjoyable trip and were attentive at all times.
This is a very special stay. We have stayed at the Ritz Carlton, Shangri-La, The Puli and a few of the Intercontinental hotels and by far this is the best stay, service and vacation we have had.
Also, this is one of the few luxury hotels in China that does not have a smoking issue. We really enjoyed the clean air and the common spaces were very relaxing (restaurant, library etc..)
Highly recommended.
