  The hotel is nice and in nice grounds. The service however is way below any five star hotel. The reception staff is inattentive, cannot even process simple tasks such as credit card guarantee and the checkout process is very long. The bar service is very unpleasant and the hostess staff at the entrance of the restaurants is not welcoming.

  It was the worst possible travel day - 5 hours on a flight that never left Pudong Airport. But our luck seemed to return - we were sent for a late night supper and overnight stay at the cush and amazing surroundings at the State Guest House. 15 chefs descended on the dining rooms, making fine Chinese delicacies for the asking. We entered our suite to discover beautiful furnishings, fine amenities, immaculate floors and linens, and something we had never seen in all our travels (admittedly, not at this level of luxury) - TV could be watched through the bathroom mirror!
  If you get delayed, stay here. Or just stay here. The grounds are beautiful and serene after the hustle of the city, and the food was superb. The service was first class all the way.

• Very pleasant surprise

  My wife and I stayed here courtesy of the airline when our flight home from Shanghai was cancelled. We were a little concerned about the potential quality of a hotel selected by the airline for 200+ passengers that were inconvenienced. As it turned out, this was a great hotel, about 1/2 hour from the Shanghai Pudong airport. The lobby and common areas were nicely decorated. We had a very nice room with a king size bed and a twin bed. We had a buffet dinner that included a variety of meat and vegetable options. The breakfast buffet was also very good with fruits, pastries and egg dishes. The hotel staff was courteous and helpful. We had a very pleasant experience.

• Good hotel but not very good service

  Hotel is located in park area of Pudong far from Shanghai downtown. Hotel is good but service may be better. Breakfast is poor (included in room rate). Pool was closed during my stay but nobody from staff at reception informed me about it. Credit card was not accepted so I paid cash.

  Every morning there is a BIG dog barking. So the peaceful first cup of coffee can't be enjoyed except with headphones. It takes a long distance to get out of the extensive grounds, and even then you are in the middle of industrial nowhere. Rooms are beautiful, breakfast buffet is excellent, staff is delightful, but the Marriott or Ramada very nearby are vastly superior in terms of taking a stroll with little restaurants and bars and shops, and separate pedestrian walking instead of at the edge of car ways
