Tranquility

Oct 6, 2025 | Trip type: CouplesGreat hotel for a weekend away from the city, without actually leaving the city! Puts the Le Meridien Sheshan in peril. Only thing is that while it is a western hotel it is very Chinese and there is not a single channel apart from CCTV something in English on the TV, but rooms are big, most have a nice balcony and the breakfast was excellent.

Great hotel for a weekend gateaway
sunshine-for-four
Shanghai, China | Oct 5, 2025 | Trip type: FamilyThe Crowne Plaza Shanghai Harbour City is a beautiful hotel on a tiny island on Dishui Lake in the south of Shanghai's Pudong. It is about an hour from Shanghai's city center. The hotel is located at the end of metro line 16 and about a 40 min walk from there, if you cannot catch a taxi.
The hotel is quite new with a very nice interior design and a surprising architecture. The whole surrounding is just beautiful with the man made lake and the great garden.
We had a regular room with twin beds and it was spacious for our family of four (kids age 8 and 9). The big bathroom and the spacious balcony with a bid daybed are a plus as well.
Although we stayed at a busy time during the national holidays, the place never felt overcrowded.
The hotel offers an indoor kids activity (charge RMB 100 per kid + adult), outdoor and indoor pool, outdoor playground, tennis and sailing.
We enjoyed the afternoon tea, breakfast offered a good choice with a focus on Asian food and some western food.
The only downside is the menu at the Cafe Bistro Restaurant. One day we ordered western style dishes and portions were very small for the prize. The next day we ordered Asian style dishes and it was way too much for one person. It did not feel right as all were in the same prize range. And, although the restaurant was not busy, our food arrived only after 45 minutes, too long with two hungry kids at the table. But it was delicous! -
Real 5*

Newcastle upon Tyne, England, United Kingdom | Oct 3, 2025 | Trip type: Friends getawayI loved this hotel. It wasn't perfect but the rooms are clean, luxurious and comfortable.
The day bed on the balcony is the best bit. It was hot while I was staying and I slept outside 1 night. Lovely listening to the sound of the lake in my sleep.
Service in the restaurants is very, very slow. Meals arrive one at a time, often with 20-30 minutes between them. Breakfast is overall good due to the variety of selections.
Outdoor pools are lovely. Indoor pool is not so great. Small and with no life guard on duty, unlike other hotels of this calibre. Lots of wet, used towels lying around.
The downside to this location is the lack of anything to do once you venture out of the hotel. There is literally nothing in the area. No shops. No real restaurants other than a couple of small Chinese family run ones. No bars. If you're happy just relaxing in the hotel grounds, it's a great place to stay. Peaceful and quiet, quite unheard of so close to Shanghai. -
an exciting and positive experience

Nice place to spend a weekend out of Shanghai
akiakola
Shanghai, China | Sep 5, 2025I live in Shanghai and decided to spend a different weekend with my husband and kids. Indeed you can have fun in this beautiful hotel: decoration in awesome, my room was huge and very well decorated (executive suite), pool is nice and surroundings are very beautiful.
What I liked:
Room: my 70m2 room was absolutely stunning and comfortable. There was a very big bathroom with balcony and jacuzzi. There was also a balcony in the bedroom and on living room - which was equipped with a 6 seats table, sofa and Bose equipment.
Hotel decoration: different from many hotels in China, the decoration was superb. Not cheesy but on the contrary very modern.
Food: although the service in the restaurant is very bad (they struggle to speak English) the food was very good.
Pool: there are 2 swimming pools (indoor and outdoor). They are nice and clean but be prepared cause if you don't wear a swimming cap they will not allow you to enter the pool. Really! I've never seen something like this. Of course I did not bring mine, but they manage to provide me one. This was really ridiculous!!!!
Bike rental: as part of the hotel activities they rent some bikes to guests. Price is reasonable and you can spend some fun time riding a 2, 3 or 4 seat bike around the hotel.
What I dislike:
Staff: they try, really, but they cannot speak English. I tried to order some food in the room but I had to change my order for a simple burger as the attendant could not understand what I was saying (and believe me, I was just reading what was written in the menu). But this is nothing peculiar to this hotel - many hotels in China "suffers" from this same problem.
Activities for kids: the hotel is huge, but it lacks activities for kids. I'd suggest a bigger playground (the actual one is very small), some toys in the kids pool and an indoor playground. There are plenty of space for that. So my recommendation is: bring your kids toys! Balls, scooters, bike, etc....
Also, the hotel is located in an island. Why not provide some water sports?!?
Location: for me the location was fine, just 1 hour driving from Shanghai, but if you want to visit Shanghai and its landmarks, do not choose this hotel. It's far from downtown and there is nothing around - which will oblige you to eat in the hotel every day.
