Good value
10sidecude
Los Altos Hills, California | Oct 25, 2025 | Trip type: Solo travelStayed for 10 nights. Room was clean, smoking free room was really no smell, which is most important to me. Bed was so so but I was able to have good sleep on it.
House keeping can be more professional. Although the bed was made everyday but floor was not vacuumed, cup was not washed.
No coffee maker in the room and 15 yuan charge to the instant coffee was ridiculous.
Breakfast was decent, many choices, wondering peacocks made the breakfast more enjoyable. -
Good Hotel

Malden, Massachusetts | Aug 23, 2025 | Trip type: CouplesThis hotel had clean and modern rooms. The staff was friendly and most spoke some English. It is a fifteen minute walk to the train station but I did feel like it was in the middle of nowhere. If I were to stay in Shanghai again, I would look for something closer to the city center. Another bonus was that they had free self-service laundry.

Great small hotel, 15 minute walk to a major train and subway station

Honolulu, Hawaii | Jul 26, 2025Nice, clean hotel. Stayed here three nights and am checking out this morning. Location a bit out of the way. I was able to walk to the underground station in 15 minutes. Staff was helpful. I am outgoing and friendly and they responded to me in kind. Room was very. small however up to date and extremely clean. I am traveling alone and it was enough for me. I am glad I stayed here.

Would have been ok; being offended as a guest though - a no go for a hotel!

Bern, Switzerland | Aug 3, 2025Currently staying at this establishment. Located 1.6 km (around 15 minutes) from Shanghai South Train Station through a local neighborhood.
The room:
we have booked a regular room. The room itself is very very small, good for one occupant. Two (as we are) is pretty tight!
No coffee (only at a charge).
Bathroom is fine.
Garden:
The "famous" garden is nothing raving about, a couple of plants, a couple of seats and that is about it. Do not expect an "oasis" as other guests have said.
Service - poor
Check-in was long (behind a chinese tour group that seems to be the main income of this hotel due to the relatively low prices). Check in staff with only limited English knowledge (could not answer me when asked until what time the subway would be open until).
The biggest upset and inconvenience was the fact that there is ONE free breakfast provided for the whole room - that is a first in all the hotels worldwide I have stayed at. We of course wanted to check the breakfast out. Unfortunately, they seemed to be almost out of a lot of dishes (at 9.00 a.m.) so I decided not to buy a SECOND breakfast and only let my partner eat. We were (rather rudely) made aware that if you not order TWO breakfasts the other guest would have to sit in a lobby style lounge area AWAY from the actual breakfast table! WHAT a shame that is: having to sit separated from your partner. Maybe they were afraid I would eat as well and not pay which was not my intention at all.
--> Treating guets as potential thieves is not the way for service proficiency and is a huge NO GO for a hotel. Therefore I have to warn other travelers from staying at this place. DO NOT SUPPORT such behavior.
To l'otel management: I expect an apology! -
Disrespectful, rude and incompetent staff
MayaNad
Jul 21, 2025Extremely disappointing stay. The staff was unbelievably rude and disrespectful - I have stayed in hundreds of hotels around the world, and I have never experienced anything like this. The entire staff should be fired - starting with the supervisor (who does not speak a word of English).
And by the way - although the hotel is supposed to be non-smoking, I saw 2 individuals smoking right outside of the lobby. This hotel is in serious need of new management.
I hope that someone takes this notice seriously because the staff is completely spoiling the potential of this hotel.
Additional Information about L otel Hotel Shanghai
-
L'otel opened its doors in late 2008 as Shanghai's first totally non-smoking hotel, and one of the first to seriously pursue green living. It was the first in Shanghai to incorporate live plant walls, that not only improve air quality but are extremely easy on the eyes. It boasts a garden that is organically fertilized, MSG free food, energy saving LED light bulbs, hand ground soy-bean milk for breakfast, Simmons dual coil beds and even Tempurpedic pillows, proving you don't need to spend much or look far to find this hidden gem tucked away in the hustle and bustle of central Shanghai. Family run and owned, the pervading warmth and soulfulness brings guests a sense of community rarely found elsewhere. Come, see, and experience the L'otel for yourself.
