  Ok maybe I was a bit harsh on the rating because this hotel is ok and perfectly fit for purpose but......
  Howard Johnson hotels are normally great, vibrant and attentive so did not meet my brand expectations (minus 1)
  The bar is never open (or at least has not been on the last 3 times I have stayed here) and we all need somewhere to chill and relax out of our room and the central lobby seating area is loud and not intimate enough (minus 1)
  The hotel is dated and needs a spruce up - not a minus but certainly not a plus
  The breakfast area is ok and reasonable equipped but staff are not great and the evening menu is limited so not a great dining experience (almost a minus)
  Good solid free wifi throughout so wrote off the other negatives
  Hotel car to airport / high speed rail station - 50rmb so very cheap
  All that said, I have kept coming back so as I said this hotel is ok but HJ should not let it carry their badge as this sets an expectation

  Howard johnson honggiao is a near airport, we use putong int airport, but this hotel is really nice for just short time, especially for time to waiting going to airport or in last day we are visit shanghai, the hotel amenities is excellent for that price, luxury lobby and give a breakfast ready in the morning, big lounge n good hotel design.

  Stayed 2 nights. It was quite grand from the lobby, but the halls and rooms are very dark and musty. The carpets needs cleaning and the rooms smelled of smoke although marked as non smoking. The bathtub rubber mat was disgusting...moldy on the top and bottom, however housekeeping graciously replaced them with cleaner ones. The front desk and concierge spoke English which was very helpful. The concierge was very helpful in guiding us around town and setting up a shuttle service for us between the city and the hotel. Breakfast was included and a nice start to our day.

  Overall I am quickly satisfied about hotels but not about this one...... It is dirty (you don't want to put your foot on the carpet) and it is noisy (hotel is along the highway). For me the two most important parameters for a good hotel. The staff is helpfull but the organization is terrible. After you ordered a beer at the bar it will take them 10 minutes to organize 'the ticket'. I am sure better hotels can be found in Shanghai for the same price.

  The hotel is OK at best. But the staff are unprofessional and unhelpful, the food is poor, the beer warm, and the wake up calls requested are not forthcoming.
  One THREE separate occasions I asked the concierge to call a taxi and each time, after waiting patiently I needed to ask again before they followed through - possibly lost in translation (?) - but I think the communication was clear enough, especially after the first time - when I explained I had a meeting to get to and time was short.
  The location is not good - situated right next to an overhead freeway - the fact that it is close to the airport is neither here nor there as a taxi is necessary, and the difference between this lousy, loud and remote location and other 5 star hotels is about 15rmb.The traffic is loud as the hotel is situated about 50 metres from an overhead freeway, and the cleanliness of the rooms is poor - my room was definitely not vacuumed before I moved in and stunk of cigarettes.
  Never say never but - I will not be back, considering how many other options are available for the same rate if not cheaper.
  I suggest the Quality Assurance of the Howard Johnson representative group stay in the hotel as mystery guests and see if they are happy with the standard that their name is being used at.
  No bedside lighting.
