Good hotel in an excellent neighborhood.
SantaFeUser
Santa Fe NM | Oct 20, 2025 | Trip type: CouplesHighest marks for location and for quality of the room. Location: the value of the location is illustrated by the fact that the Untour breakfast food tour starts and ends very near this hotel, and never strays more than 2 blocks away. Nice area to walk around - lots of places to eat in a neighborhood with tree-lined streets, much shopping, and a good bit of local Shanghai charm.
Room: we had a suite, very large, comfortable and quiet with excellent bed, bathroom, and amenities (including free Wi-Fi), and at a quite modest price. FYI, the scallion oil noodles at 607 Changle Rd ((葱油拌面 2 block walk – found it through the food tour) were among the best we have had in more than 50 years of global travel. Fun watching them made on-site as well.
Not rated a five because of some glitches in service. Worst was that we had booked an airport pick-up for arrival from U.S. (not easily done as hotel didn't answer e-mails), but it never showed. With the help of an information desk at Pudong, we reached the hotel and after several calls determined that they sent a car to wrong airport. We eventually took a cab which meant considerable time spent wandering the area before we used our own map to find the correct location. The hotel is hard to see from the road, but we were resolute in refusing to get out at the places the driver suggested. This problem would not have occurred with a proper pick-up. The hotel did pay for the cab.
We arrived at the hotel very tired and cranky, where reception seemed largely indifferent to the problem they caused, though this could have been a consequence of the limited ability to communicate (English speakers were scarce at the Mansion). After this bad start, service improved somewhat later in our stay, and was good at check-out. An example of less good service is that my wife wanted a massage; hotel staff provided no help at all.
Our one breakfast was good in quality and service, though pricey, especially in comparison to what is available in the neighborhood. We ate on the terrace outside – very nice space if it isn’t raining, so no need to eat in the lobby. The hotel restaurants were closed during our visit.
Now that we know how to find the hotel, we would definitely stay again! -
Perfect location

Aug 30, 2025 | Trip type: CouplesSpacious rooms, old Shanghai feeling and great location! The bed was not the most comfortable but was fine. Stayed for one night after my flight was canceled. I would stay again for longer. The room was very clean and staff was helpful. Walking distance from lost of shops and restaurants.

Step back in time!

Bangkok, Thailand | Jul 27, 2025 | Trip type: CouplesI have stayed at The Mansion three times over the last year or so and have loved it for its unique decor and ambience and it superb location in the heart of the old French Concession. The bedrooms and bathrooms are sumptuous and the lobby a wonderful place to sit and relax while people watching. The only thing lacking is a breakfast room. There are so many great little places for breakfast around the hotel, it is better to go out. Staff are helpful and friendly and the Internet is excellent.

Amazing Unique Hotel, Great Rooms, More Like a Master Bedroom than a Hotel Room
Grant A
Los Altos Hills, California | Jun 24, 2025 | Trip type: FamilySo this hotel has a history, apparently it used to be the headquarters for a Shanghai organized crime syndicate, but I don't have all the facts due to a language barrier. Anyway, the lobby is a veritable 1920's museum; the post-Victorian architecture provides the backdrop for a multitude of artifacts from the time the mansion served as a gang headquarters.
Our room was huge, filled with an ornate, oversized King bed, desk and antique furniture, lamps and knick-knacks. This room was probably the most unique hotel room in which I've ever stayed; it was so nice. It was like being given a glorious master bedroom in the home of a friend. The bathroom had a huge two-person tub that took nearly an hour to fill (not for lack of water pressure) and a separate large shower.
Now for the minor negatives: There is no dining room, the included breakfast was ordered from a door-hanging menu card and could be taken in the lobby (seating is sofas and armchairs, no tables) or your room. The menu offered both western and Asian foods, but the serving sizes were so small on our second day we doubled our order size for everything we ordered. Another minor negative, is that some rough edges were obvious. The shower caulking was yellowed and a bit mildewed, the rugs showed some wear, and the wallpaper in our kids' room was peeling a bit at the edges. That kept this place from getting 5 stars, but it also made the place a little more "real" and less like a cookie-cutter hotel room. It would not stop me from recommending the hotel. The last minor negative was, as a relatively small hotel, the English language skills of the staff were "adequate" for communication, but only encountered one staff person, on the day shift who was very fluent.
The hotel is located in the charming French Quarter and was a 15 Yuan ($2.50 U.S.) taxi ride to the Bund and other popular attractions and landmarks.
I loved this hotel and would certainly stay here next time over a conventional hotel. -

Brisbane | Apr 15, 2025 | Trip type: CouplesOur second stay after a five year gap. Room smelt of stale smoke , air conditioning did not work until we reported it. Other guests very loud late in evenings. Staff seem not interested in their job , never a smile over priced living on past reputation.
