historic building turned into a luxurious residence
Pandotto
Shanghai, China | Nov 14, 2025this place is hidden behind Xinghua hotel at the corner of Jiangsu Road & Huashan Road, not very easy to find. I was told that the building is already more than 100years old, while the hotel started about 5years ago. The interior decoration is simple but pleasant, very european. Service is something that has much room to improve: there was no person answering the phone around 21:00; the internet was lousy and nobody fixed it after several complaints.

Beautiful Hotel!
MsBuoniViaggi
Aug 30, 2025 | Trip type: CouplesThis was a great hotel! Rooms were very spacious and clean and the bed was really comfortable! The hotel was an old mansion so it is beautiful! The scene in the hotel was a bit strange and a little like a ghost town. It has a really great looking bar that was always empty and a restaurant that was reservation and prefix menu only. I would stay there again because the rooms were so great but i would love to see this place get better with regards to bar and get a more normal restaurant or room service.

Alexandra Bridge Provincial Park, Canada | May 14, 2025 | Trip type: CouplesThis is a nice and quiet place (not easy to find at first) in the hassle of shanghai. the staff and management are really at your service. There are several variety of food (chinese or western). The negative point: the spa needs a week reservation and this is not for us tourist who stay for a few days only.

Survived Shanghai

Half Moon Bay, California | Apr 29, 2025 | Trip type: Solo travelI had only a short trip to China, and came to Shanghai after a few days in Hangzhou. Frankly I found it all too overwhelming, the traffic, the vast size of the city and the pollution. But the hotel was a wonderful refuge and offered the peace and quiet I need to enjoy some sightseeing and urban hiking! I had a wonderful room with great service. The best bed and linens I have ever experienced. This hotel made the stay worth it. Its very different from the big glassy places, but - that is what I wanted!

Badly Mismanaged

United Kingdom | May 17, 2025 | Trip type: CouplesThe 2 stars are awarded mainly for the quality of the bedroom. This is very spacious, the bed very comfortable excellent bathroom, double sinks, bath shower etc. a good sized living area, terrace on which one can view the small backstreets and very quiet. The décor is a well made reconstruction of colonial style 30’s interiors. This décor continues in most of the others rooms (lounge, reception etc).
Our booking for 3 nights was arranged by a very reputable UK tour company (Audley) so we were looking forward to the stay. After settling into the room I thought to ask in the bar to see the menu for dinner, after 16 minutes a lady arrived with a piece of A4 paper and showed me the menus in Chinese, not speaking Chinese I asked what was the ‘set’ menu, then I realised she did not speak English so after 5 minutes of effort, I gave up and realised we would have to eat out, she walked away as confused as myself. It dawned on me that very little English was spoken and all the staff looked very young and inexperienced. We ate out that night and asked about the chance to use the advertised pool, but we're told this was shut and as for a spa nobody seemed to understand, so went to bed.
In the morning at 8 went for breakfast to be told it was served in the room (we had not been told this on arrival) therefore ordered 2 breakfasts in the room. After 1 hour nothing had arrived so I complained, 15 minutes later it arrived – the coffee could have been made 1 hour earlier and the bacon, sausage equally cold so of course I complained and in 10 minutes 2 new cups arrived. As we left the hotel I asked to speak to the manager via our daily guide from Audley, unfortunately they didn't know when he would arrive. On return in the evening an ‘apology gift’ arrived to say sorry for the breakfast fiasco, ‘thank you’, at least some recognition. Next evening decided to have a drink in the bar, the drinks list has a number of cocktails, my wife asking for one, you guessed! the young barman had zero idea of how to make it, not a clue even with the assistance of a young girl this was 15 minutes finally my wife chose a Gin and tonic and I had the house wine, they charged 12-15% SERVICE CHARGE! There was ‘no’ service, they should have deducted it. This is a so called 5 star hotel with around £200 a night charges and is in Relais et Chateaux.
My conclusion is that it is an incredibly badly managed hotel, no chance to speak to manager, an untrained non English speaking staff who seem more interested in looking at their mobile phones and in the mirror. If you are wanting an international customer then good English is ESSENTIAL!! What a pity for such a charming hotel and business.
