Good and bad, certainly not 5 star!
Dave R
North London | Oct 28, 2025 | Trip type: CouplesThis hotel was a strange mixture of good and bad, as summarised below.
On the good side the breakfast buffet was excellent, although finding a table wasn't always easy and finding the "egg man" was even more challenging as there is another serving area rather hidden from the others.
The area around the hotel has nothing worthy of mention in the way of shops or restaurants but there are a few small "supermarkets" for water, beer and snacks etc. and the excellent, easy to use Shanghai Metro is just a few minutes walk away and opens up the whole of Shanghai meaning the hotel is well located in this respect.
The hotel reception area is quite impressive as are the large bedrooms, initially, as we found them to be very dark and uninviting in the evening and the wardrobe space quite compromised by the safe, ironing board, umbrella and "evacuation masks". The extra large bed was very comfortable and the bathroom had both a bath and large separate shower.
We stayed here for a few extra days after a busy Wendy Wu tour (excellent by the way) and were extremely disappointed that the advertised pool, spa and gym were unavailable due to refurbishment. As the weather was awful we really missed the opportunity to use these facilities and the hotel offered no alternative.
In summary, this is not a 5 star hotel and the bedrooms, whilst large, are very gloomy. The buffet breakfast is good, including rather nice smoked salmon. The location is somewhat uninspiring but actually very well placed for access to the metro system which is cheap, easy to use and very comprehensive, permitting access to most of Shanghai's "must sees". -
OK hotel in Shangha

Tromsø, Norway | Oct 24, 2025The hotel may have five stars in the logo, but is is NOT a five star hotel. Too many strange things.
The breakfast is very good. The staff is friendly, but do not speak much english, but they try. The room we had smelled at bit old, but it was OK. The bed was super.
Problems: (1) The bar in the lobby is no bar. The bartender cannot make the simplest drink like Gin and Tonic. (2) The lobby is the scene for buying prostitues in the evening. Not very cozy. -

Llandegla, United Kingdom | Sep 28, 2025 | Trip type: FamilyWe stayed here for two nights on a Wendy Wu "Wonders of China Tour". Although a little out of the city this did not matter as we had a full itinerary. The rooms were large, comfortable and well maintained. The breakfasts were both western and Chinese. This was a really good base in a bustling city. However, it is not the place to stay if you want to wander out into the bright lights of Shanghi in the evening although taxis are relatively cheap to use and easily accessible.

Good hotel with worst bar in the world
andyjbale
Weston super Mare, United Kingdom | Sep 26, 2025 | Trip type: CouplesStopped here for two nights . lovely hotel , good rooms, nice restaurant and very good value shop. We were with a tour group and some of our gang decided to hit the bar after a long day. Most wanted beer which was not a problem , my wife wanted a gin and tonic the barman look at us as startled as if we had asked for Uranium. He offered us the drinks menu and indicated we should point at our request, we did he still looked like a startled rabit shrugged his shoulders and commented only beer . I pointed to a bottle of Beafeater on the shelf ,and after a short while he said"water" apparently the bottles on display only contained coloured water. we sought advice from reception and the head honcho came with me to explain to Manuel what I wanted. After a long rapor he disappeared and I was stood at the bar none the wiser , I rejoined my friends who were in histerics watching my efforts to obtain this most common of drinks for my Missus. Then all of a sudden acdoor at the side of the bar burst open and a suited guy bearing a bottle of Gordon's appeared . he then proceeded to show Manuel how to measure out an optic. The drink duly arrived 35 mins after our initial request. As you can imagine we were all rolling about by now. As for my self I am not a beer drinker so you can imagine the uproar when I tried to order a scotch. This arrived some 30 odd mins later. By this time I had already gone to the local supermarket and was well into a bottle of walkers black label. Fawlty towers eat your heart out.
