183 days abroad - Astor Shanghai
Abroad183days
Oct 17, 2025 | Trip type: BusinessThis hotel is old by china standards. In fact it's the first western hotel built in China! Worthwhile staying for the history. Everyone from Charlie Chaplain, Ulysses Grant Albert Einstein as well as Beijing the 3 month hideout for one of the early presidents of China. Not to mention this is where they opened the first stock exchange in China and turned on the first electric light! So yes it's old and interesting. Room I stayed in was very large. I have stayed at the Hyatt up the road at twice the price but this hotel is closer to the main Bund, cheaper and more interesting ( you can go to the Hyatt bar for the view anyway it's free access to the public) so yes it's old. Service is ok, but not fantastic. Again it's old, so step back in time and realize it's not going to be perfect. Room was very large (in fact I could have got another double bed in the room and still had plenty of space). I got the one the past president hid out in! If your a bit over same again hotels and like a bit of history this one is worth checking into. Internet worked ok once I got connected. Small tea place downstairs open during the day ( but expensive). It's very convenient to the Bund and a beautiful and safe walk home at night.

LovelY old hotel
sallygh
england | Oct 14, 2025Fantastic building worth wandering around exploring , the rooms we were given were probably not the best , in the roof , no view , but good size and well equipped . If you can I would choose other rooms , which looked much nicer.
There was a heat wave in Shanghai and they had not turned the air con on! So hot in the roof , we were given a fan but my kids in the other room couldn't have one as they ran out.
The dining room was nice for dinner , food and. Service was good , breakfast in the peacock old ballroom was fine .good position , near the bund. -
Still a rather good choice for history buffs despite the non deliverance of the 'suite'.

Singapore, Singapore | Oct 11, 2025 | Trip type: FamilyThis is a hotel that reeks of history. One would feel to be transported back to the past. It would have to be a pleasant stay if not for a certain incident that marred it.
I booked Astor Suite from Hotel.com. From the introduction write up on this class of Astor Suite, it was clearly written as 85 square metres as well as access to its Executive Lounge and exclusive check in/out.
However, there were to be no such privileges and untrue of the size of the so called suite. Although it has a room and a separate living room, the area is definitely no where near the stated 85 square metres. Our check in and out was just as per any other norm guests. There was also no mention of the Executive Lounge nor any access or any privilege of using this as well. When I asked them about it, the reception insisted that the small suite that we had was indeed the Astor Suite. They also informed when I asked about the lounge that we would have to pay for the things or food therein. I felt kind of being shortchanged in this aspect. I was informed by the reception that there was nothing they can do about it and that I should get back with Hotel.com about my unhappiness.
Hopefully Hotel.com can check and confirm with Astor House to make sure that the write up/intro are factual.
Other than this, we had enjoyed our time touring the considerably well preserved hotel. We also enjoyed our breakfast in a elegant-looking hall. Felt like we were dining in the good old glamour Shanghai time. The restaurant staff and the bell boys were professional and helpful. -
Regal beauty desperate for some TLC

nickylou | Oct 6, 2025Absolutely fantastic location for The Bund, without paying The Bund Prices. Remember that.
Echo the comments regarding it being a bit rough around the edges. It is. It needs a huge overhall. Moreso in sympathy for its former grandeur.
Our room was big, clean, extremely comfy bed and there was attention to detail.
Breakfast in the Peacock Hall (former Shanghai Stock Exchange?) spectacular.
If you are looking for standard of service which is reflected by The Bund location, forget it. It's almost there but the river separates it.
We were hardly there though, it was just a bed. But a very comfy one at that. -

Palm Springs, California | Oct 1, 2025 | Trip type: CouplesThis has become my favorite hotel of all time. Built in 1846 and maintained in the original style. Beautiful red teak floors in many places. Check in staff friendly and some of them spoke English. Rooms are large and we'll equipped. Be sure to check out Peacock Hall where a morning buffet is served for 88 yuan per person. Many selections.
Located at WaiBaidu Bridge and close to the Bund.
We will be returning
Additional Information about Astor House Hotel Shanghai
-
Established in 1846, the Astor House played a significant role in Shanghai's early modern history.Notable moments include the city's first electric lights (1882) and first telephone call (1901). However, though it was cutting edge back in the days of trolleys and steamships, some guests would tell you that the Astor hasn't quite made it out of the twentieth century. The spacious 134 rooms and suites are fully equipped with safety deposit boxes, refrigerators, Internet, large-screen TVs, and are full of old Shanghai charm.
This central Shanghai hotel is a brilliant example of classic colonial-era architecture, and if you value atmosphere, history and charm, it will be a fantastic place to stay. Just to the north of the Bund across Suzhou Creek, the Astor House is a pleasant ten-minute walk north from Nanjing Dong Lu and its metro station.
Both traditional Shanghainese and Western dishes are available are Richard's Restaurant, while the bar offers light drinks and refreshments.
Guests can sing karaoke or enjoy a relaxing foot massage at the spa. Other facilities include currency exchange services, free parking, and a gift shop. -
