• A good hotel in central Nanning

  A vast hotel complex in a large garden in the centre of Nanning, next door to the pleasant People's Park. We were in building # 1. Large and comfortable room, well equipped (good free Wifi), perfectly clean and very quiet. The breakfast buffet (included in room rate) is extensive and completely Chinese in character, with no concession to western taste. Better get there early, though, because the dishes are not often replenished. Friendly and efficient staff. Good value for money.

  This is the VIP section of a larger hotel complex in downtown Nanning. It is older and of local historical value as Chairman Mao stayed here on occasion, and it is a typical place where foreign visitors are accommodated.
  Any of the old English-language reviews are obsolete because the hotel rooms meanwhile got completely renovated and refurbished. There are modern marble baths with strong rainshowers, large flatscreen TV's, tasteful decorations with framed Miao textile art, excellent wlan and lan connections for free, great firm beds with excellent linens, lots of electricity outlets, A/C not aimed at the bed, and so on. As is typical for Chinese hotels of this kind, most rooms are smoking rooms, and rooms are wall-to-wall carpeted, which I really do not like and which is not suitable for the local weather, but both is the local taste.
  Reception staff English is spotty; how is your Chinese? :-) Highly recommended: The very cheap, fast, and excellent laundry (items folded around cardboard and individually wrapped in transparent foil). The hotel complex has a nice outdoor pool one can use. Good location in downtown Nanning, walking distance to some nice shops, bakeries and so on; easy pickup for cars as well.
  The breakfast in the restaurant has a big Cantonese spread with many varieties of dumplings, but breakfast (rather than lunch or dinner) I like Western, and there were literally no such choices, except coffee and milk. And the food was only okay and usually cold. The restaurant is faded, especially the furniture, and only features round tables for 8. We had one dinner here, and this had some amazing fish dishes (cod fried in bamboo net, mudfish).
  In sum, surely a recommendable business hotel. Small downsides for me, but I would stay here again, especially if I could get a smoke-free room.

• Mingyuan... STAY AWAY!!!!

  The Mingyuan Hotel should be shut down for renovations. The rooms are smelly (moldy smell), the carpets are dirty and the furniture is beat up. The bathroom is poorly maintained, the tub had a grim ring around. They told me that the Mingyuan Hotel is a 5 star hotel, maybe but on a scale of 30. This hotel should not even be considered for an overnight.

• Don't stay here if you are accustomed to western business hotels

  If you are a frequent business traveler, heck if you are accustomed to decent hotels, I would not reccomend this place
  The facilites are very old and dated, from the lobby with torn furniture to the beat up and out dated meeting facilities. It is just not a good hotel by western standards. I guess it was at one time a very fine hotel (maybe in the 1970's) but it definately could use a little updating
  We flew in on a Saturday night and arrived about 11pm, the lobby was dark and almost looked deserted, the staff speaks little to almost no english so we were thankful to have a translator with us.
  They wanted to "please us" so they were kind enough to upgrade us at no extra charge to the VIP building located next door. Everything in this hotel is very dated and not working well, especially the A/C in the common areas and with our stay being in late August it would have been nice to have some cold air inside the stuff hotel.
  The rooms are liek stepping back in a time machine to 1978 and the carpet and the wall paper are all dingy and dirty. The bed was literally as hard as cement (but the pillows were nice and fluffy). The linens were clean and the bathroom was clean but very small and cramped. The televisions are the newest items in the hotel but I woudl say they are also about 15 years old at best and there are only 2 english stations and they are very obscure (not the typical BBC or CNN you find in other hotels around China).
  There is only hard wired internet at the desk in the room and no WiFi anywhere in the hotel. You can also forget getting anything printed in the business center if your software is newer than Windows 98.
  The food in the restaurant is terrible by any western standards (and I have stayed in some pretty shabby Chinese hotels with bad restaurants), but I guess there is a reason the Steaks were only 24rmb. I suggest you pack a lunch and some power bars becuase the breakfast stinks and the western restaurant is horrible. But they did have a wide variety of very good coffee and they make a great Latte - . . . Joe Sloboda
  On the bright side there is a pretty good KTV bar and Spa located on the backside of the hotel with a very attentive and attractive staff
  Bottom line . . . try to get a room at the Marriott when in Nanning and avoid this place

• Dirty, Smelly, Molded

  You should try every effort to AVOID this hotel!!
  The room is smelly, you can find mold on the carpet and on the wall. The bathroom is poorly maintained and the towels are dirty. The corridor is dark, sticky and smelly too. I am not looking for something deluxe but just a room to sleep -- this hotel still fails!!
  Be careful not to confuse this Mingyuan Hotel (low-rise) with the other Mingyuan Xindu Hotel (high-rise). They are located next to each other sharing some recreational facilities but they are two totally different grade hotels.
