• Two nights at the Cumberland

  We stayed here for two nights during a quick visit to Nanjing.
  —The room—
  Large, with a soft mattress instead of the typically firmer mattresses found in China. Little 'kitchen' area with a kettle and a mini-fridge under the bench. Other drawers and cupboards in the kitchen were empty, with the trashcan found over by the window. Shower and toilet separate with a sliding door. Television all Chinese language except for CCTV-9 and HBO. CNN and others were listed as available but weren't. Signage with information about how things in the room work (e.g. Wifi) and how to find things was in English and Chinese, all clear enough.
  Overall comfortable, no noise from outside.
  —The service—
  All friendly enough. Didn't have occasion to use English with them. Helped with directions to nearby locations. We made use of their free stored luggage option to leave some bags behind the desk after we checked out. Bags were tagged, with a slip to show before you could collect them back.
  —The location—
  We paid a bit extra because of the central location. Taxis were easy to find near the hotel, and the drivers were all familiar with the location when on the back. Roughly a 15-minute walk to the nearest subway, Easy 30-minute walk to Hunan Road/Lion Bridge food street; 40 or so minutes to Chaotiangong on foot.
  —Nearby—
  In the same building are Element Fresh and Blue Frog. Blue Frog opens at 10am, Element Fresh at 11am, so neither are an option for breakfast. Walk out of the hotel lobby and turn right to find convenience shops and a fruit seller about 200m away.
  —Other—
  Breakfast for one was included with the room, with breakfast for the second person available at an extra cost of 88 RMB. We didn't take the option for breakfast at the hotel.
  I'd stay here again, but would first check to see if I missed a slightly cheaper option close by.
  Overall, we were happy with our stay The Cumberland.

  I've been too a lot of hotels in Nanjing and Cumberland is one of the most tasteful ones I've been too. I stayed there with my mom and dad who came to see me settled in at my University. I hadn't learnt any Mandarin yet so communication was a bit of a problem, we still got what we wanted.The decor throughout hotel really impressed me and the room was pretty comfortable. One of the best things about it is it's location almost being smack right in the middle of Xinjiekou surrounded by malls, restaurants(The Blue Frog is good but if you wanna save money try looking up Saizeriya in Shanghai Lu), cinemas, the metro and other stores.

  Great size suites, and helpful staff. Not sure if the hotels fault or the booking website but we ended up with a room on a smoking floor. The room itself didn't smell like smoke but occasionally it could be smelled from the corridor. Otherwise all great.

• Excellent Spot for a stay that doesnt feel like a Chinese Hotel

  This hotel is wonderful, great lobby and check in was easy and there are English speaking people. The rooms were wonderful with comfortable beds and it was a spacious room. The free sodas and fruit were an added touch. The great bathroom and toiletries were just an added bonus.

  The location is fantastic. Very close to the luxury shops in Deji Plaza and plenty of good restaurants close by. The hot water system is a bit unusual and hard to work out and although the wifi is free, it's pretty slow which made it hard to get much done.
