• Modern comfort in Pingyao

  This hotel is a five minute drive to the old city of Pingyao (10 yuan taxi ride) no need to drag your luggages across the old town, nice restaurant with English menu and pictures! One waitress can speak good English! One of the lady manager can also speak English and can help you! Convenient laundry service and ATM in the lobby! Car service for nearby attractions(uploaded picture)

  Comfortable room - met all our needs. Bed firm - usual for China.
  Didn't like glass wall between en suite and room- no privacy!
  Staff spoke virtually no English but they were very friendly,polite, honest and they went out of their way to help us wherever they could.
  Steamed veg ordered from in room service was tasty but chicken dish was mostly gristle.
  Glad we stayed outside Pingyou main walls - found everyone inside walls on a mission to cheat the tourist!

  While staying inside the walled old city has its charm- if confort is a must- stay outside the walls (15' minutes walk to the old city ) in a modern hotel ran by a professional hotel management company (Jianguo Hotels)
  Very new hotel (2 years) - very decent beds and modern bathroom- suprisingly good breakfast- service attitude of the staff (trained as per Jianguo standards) Value for money!
  Traveling extensively in China on business one get's to know what to expect from Jianguo hotels (as a Chinese hotel management company they stand out over their local competitors and nearly reach western standards)
  The old city has some charming hotels but the beds are incredibly hard- sanitary conditions so/so. Mostly chinese breakfast (except if you want to splurge in the Jin's Residence (not value for money because too expensive- you expect more for 250 usd ++)

  I stayed in this hotel for 2 nights last week when visiting Pingyao. I think this is a much better option than the motels inside the old city of Pingyao.
  Location: Good location. While outside the old Pingyao city walls, it is within reasonable walking distance to the old city (15 - 20 mins walk) or you can catch a local bike that looks like a golf cart to get there if you prefer not to walk. This hotel seems to be very famous and high class in the eyes of the locals, everyone appears to know about this hotel once you mentioned the name. The motels inside the old city wall are much cheaper but they may not be a good choice if you arrive by train in the evening and have to catch a cab from the train station to the old city and then take your baggages and walk all the way to your motel (note: inside the walls, cars are only allowed for a very short distance with road blocks near the entrance of the village. Then you have to walk to the centre of the town.
  Staffs (Front desk, porter and the older man that looks after the carpark): All very friendly and professional. They give very good advice in travelling and provide good street direction. The porter even walked my brother-in-law to a local bank to do currency exchange as he worries that my brother-in-law may not be able to find the place - it's quite a few big blocks away from the hotel.
  Room: Very clean and spacious. Bed is very comfortable. You also have a choice of different pillows such as lavender, wheat, herbs etc.
  Breakfast: Breakfast was yummy and the range of selection is pretty good. They cook noodles on the spot and also have a chef making fried eggs at the counter. My fussy Uncle asked for 5 fried egg whites only and the chef happily cook that for him. They have both Chinese and Western breakfast in the buffet.
  Only negative is the noise from the street. This hotel in fact is not quite close to the main road but facing a park. Due to lack of tall buildings there, the noise from the main road is quite notable. In Pingyao, drivers of cars/bikes/bicycles put their horns on all the time as warning that they are coming. Also fire crackers are used all the time. So I would recommend travellers to request for a room facing the back and not the front to avoid the noise.

• Surprisingly good hotel

  We arrived here at 2300 hours after a terrible train trip from Beijing-Taiyuan-Pingyao. The last part of the trip in a local train with drunken people so we were a bit afraid that we would have problems in the hotel. None of that. Although the english of the staff was limited to one person they did everything to help us. We were checked in and they even arranged a sandwich for us at that time.
  The room was good, wired internet, clean, a good shower so we went to sleep tired. The next day we had a good breakfast, western/chinese combined, the waitress was very helpful although she did not speak a word english. We had some problems with the airco, it took a while but finally we were moved to another room. They also arranged a taxi to the Taiyuan airport for us.
  All in all a good hotel, I can recommend, there are only a few people who speak English but everyone is very helpful. The location is only a 5 minute drive by taxi to the Pingyao old town, a must visit place.
  This hotel is not in the Pingyao old town but the standard of the hotel is high, probably higher then the guesthouses in the old town. Spacious nice clean room, free internet, good breakfast and for a price of about 45 euro a night including breakfast.
