Outdated...
Jamgrace
Oct 10, 2025 | Trip type: BusinessI was disappointed as soon as I walked in the room. It looked outdated...it showed wear...I could see stains on furniture...bathroom needs updated, too. Even my wife looking at the room behind me while I was using Facetime noticed the room seemed outdated.
My room did have a huge bed...larger than a King. My view was of an alley...I must have not paid much for my room compared o others. There has to be a better room.
I wasn't here for the tourism so it may be better for the location on West Lake. -
Not your usual boring hyper-techno hotel in China
Peter A
Hong Kong, China | Sep 10, 2025 | Trip type: BusinessI have lived in China for almost 30 years now, and I think that I can state that this is the nicest hotel that I have been to : the position is fantastic, overlooking the West Lake in HangZhou ( and by overlooking I mean, the lake is right there in front of the hotel entrance ).
The hotel is surrounded by thick vegetation and the general environment, both inside the hotel and outside, is surprisingly elegant and not kitsch as is sadly the case in so many other places in China, with absurd multi coloured lightning or concrete statues of " manga " like creatures.
In this hotel, as well as around this West Lake, one can still feel that grace, that elegance and understatement that we tend to think of when dreaming of " Old China ". I can talk of the East Wing where I have been staying a few times, ok there is a giant Guilin image 8 meters high right in the lobby, but it doesn't disturb, that's part of the culture.
What is instead fascinating are the rooms, spacious, with a pleasant art-deco-ish feeling to them, one would imagine that the guest houses where Chairman Mao or
Deng Hsiao Ping lived would have had the same kind of style.
Now, for all of you who get aroused, when entering a hotel room, by the fact that you have to titillate with your middle fingertip the " touch sensitive " light switches until you get precisely that nerdy degree of light intensity that is so " you ", well you better avoid this hotel : here the situation is pretty bad, be warned that to turn on the lights you press against a switch, you hear " click ", and the light is on ! So for you guys there are thousands of other hotels to choose from, you'll be disappointed with by one.
But if you belong to that human sub-group close to extinction, who still knows how to dream, to imagine, who doesn't give a damn if they're not surrounded by technology all the way to the toilet, then this place will remain in your memory.
Finally, staff are, as always in China, extremely courteous, polite and ready to help. -
Might be good for vacation, but not for business trip
Alex99998
Austin, Texas | Jul 11, 2025 | Trip type: BusinessThis is an older property (no exaggeration, they have pictures of Kissinger visiting) in the middle of a tourist area. It is a long drive from the airport. Getting to anywhere in Hangzhou takes a long time. WIFI is spotty depending on where you are in the hotel. Breakfast buffet is average, at best. On the plus side the nearby lake is scenic and there are plenty of reasonably priced restaurants within a short walk. I might go here for a vacation but for business I would choose a modern hotel in the city.

weekend short trip

Nanjing | Jul 8, 2025 | Trip type: Solo travelThe location of the hotel is wonderful, in a nice lush garden next to West lake, a 20 minutes walk from the center of the city if taking the historic dam through the lake. A very 'Hangzhou' experience. The staff was extremely attentive and welcoming. Buffet dinner quality at the garden café could have been better, but it might have delighted a seafood-lover....

Additional Information about Shangri-La Hotel Hangzhou
-
Located on the northwest banks of West Lake (Xi Hu), the Shangri-La (Hangzhou Xianggelila Fandian) is, though a bit worn around the edges, easily one of the best luxury hotels in town.
Though at first glance the rather unassuming building doesn't promise to live up to the standards of other Shangri-La hotels, the rooms are large, clean and spacious, the staff helpful and pleasant, and the location choice. Many east-wing rooms boast fine views of the lake, and west-wing rooms overlook lush gardens.
As the Shangri-La is slightly removed from the center of town, and it can therefore be quite peaceful. Onsite dining is another strong point, The Peppino Restaurant offers Italian cuisine, and the Shang's dim sum and dinners come recommended. Weekend buffets and summertime barbecues in the garden are also a major plus.
The well-equipped meeting facilities in the hotel cater to different functions including meetings, conferences, banquets and receptions. A banquet hall with a capacity of 450 persons and seven multifunctional halls of different sizes are at guests' disposal.
Guests looking to keep fit can burn calories in gym, tennis court and swimming pool. After workout, they can rejuvenate themselves in sauna bathroom. Those interested in less strenuous recreation can play chess and poker in games room. -
