It does the job but there are some limitations
Buzzwald
Melbourne, Australia | Oct 23, 2025 | Trip type: BusinessThe Clayton Hotel is a Chinese hotel and they don't really cater for Western stayers. Reading some reviews from others past they had a real dig at the poor breakfast and lack of English speaking skills. Let me set things straight, there is plenty to choose from at breakfast and whilst predominantly Chinese there's a fair assortment of cereals, pastries, fruit, other other normal items. If you wish to be adventurous then try the Chinese food and enjoy the experience.
Probably the biggest issue is the English speaking skills and yes it's fair to say they really do struggle. But if you take your time and offer due respect to people trying to speak a foreign language then you'll sort things out, patience is the key.
The rooms are big and offer all items.
They offer a shuttle to the Canton Fair which we used but make sure you arrive at the right time because there's only 1 leaving per day, check with reception. If you miss that as I did you cant get a taxi to take you to the fair due to the short driving distance and traffic conditions and you'll have to walk. The walk is about 5kms so not too bad but you arrive a bit hot. Being from Australia we're used to the heat so we cope but I'm sure others would find it quite distressing, get the shuttle. There's an onsite pizza/pasta restaurant that's fabulous and it has an amazing assortment of beers from around the World, we tried to work our way through them all one evening. It's a relaxed enjoyable place.
At the end of the day it's a Chinese Hotel but blimey you could be in a whole lot worse as I have been so keep things in perspective and relax. -

A quiet hotel away from the hustle of the city
CAROLYNE K
Jun 6, 2025 | Trip type: Friends getawayWe stayed for 3 nights. The rooms were very spacious and clean. The place is also quiet since its in a residential area . communication was such an issue due to the language barrier. Most of the staff cannot speak a English apart from the supervisors.
The food wasn't good and was mostly Chinese. The hotel should serve an international cuisine since majority of the guests are from other countries. -
Dissapointing

Chicago, Illinois | May 22, 2025 | Trip type: BusinessThis is quite a nice hotel from appearance. Unfortunately they have too many negatives and miss being a nice hotel in reality. The staff where polite, but ineffective. The breakfast buffet has to be the worst in China. How do you make orange juice hot? The guy making eggs to order looked like he just changed the oil on his car.
The water pressure fluctuations in the shower caused the temperature to swing from scalding to freezing back and forth.....made me crazy.
Thank goodness the pizza place near the lobby was pretty good or I would have starved in the hotel.
English is a problem....but that's true in many China hotels.....but this one was worse than most.
They don't honor confirmations and will sell your room if late so make sure you call. My freind arrived 30 minutes late and found that out.
I don't think I would come back
