• Feeling old and tired

  This hotel is about the only place in this area and seems to take advantage of customers for that reason. The standard answer here is "we will try to improve" but they do not. I have attached pictures to show most issues in the hopes that management will see the issues as they are here and not see the hotel as shown in an old advertisement.
  I travel in Asia fairly often so this is based upon my experiences and the facts.
  The hotel at first look is very nice, but do not look very hard or you will see it coming apart at the seems.
  On my recent visit I checked in with a reservation and was immediately told I had 3 rooms when I only booked 2 and I had the printed confirmation from the hotels website, not a booking company. Also the rate in their system was higher then my booked rate. This was resolved but should never have happened.
  I was on the club floor (8) and the room was nice, large and clean. The room is now stripped to the minimum required items. Only two towels, two wash clothes, and one hand towel. Most items in the mini bar are missing accept for a very basic tea and instant coffee mix. The patio is dirty and in rough condition.
  When walking to the rooms you will notice the carpets in the hallways are stained and pulling apart, mold is noticeable in many areas. The skyway walk areas are dirty and stained and need paint, also in the daytime they are very very hot, it seems like the aircon is turned off in these areas adding to the musty smell.
  The Pool at one time was very nice, you can tell by the pictures constantly being displayed in the hotel video screens, but it is now showing a serious amount of neglect. It is kept free of debris on a daily basis but green mold grows on the floor of most areas and the hammocks on the sides are worn, stretched, and molded. One the other side of the hotel is a kiddie pool complex, again great design, but basically forgotten and left to fade away. There is a area that was a Tiki bar but is is full of old furniture and is closed. They do have some pretty neat ideas and even rafts to use, it would be great if it was up to par. A professional cleaning of the pool and deck is seriously overdue.
  The bar at the center of the lobby is still the poster child for disorganization and the classic 3rd world operation. The Coffee/cappuccino machine is covered with a bar towel, and all surfaces behind the bar are as well. This needs to be cleaned and wiped, not covered. Ordering a drink/coffee/beer is a painful process at best. Just tonight I watched the bar help pour a draft beer, take a second glass and spoon out the foam so they could pour more into the glass by using a valve on the side of the tap. The floor in the "HUB" is also covered with stained dirty carpets. I am sure at one time this was a great place.
  The Mad Scientist bar is located in the corner of the hotel by the spa entrance. I walked in and the smell of a wet dirty locker room was the first thing to great me. There must be some serious water issues here and the musty smell is overwhelming at times. This was one of those times.
  The breakfast buffet is average, it is setup in a very strange order and the restaurant is dirty. You will notice stains on the seats, the table bases, the floor is dirty, and the windows and side glass is covered in hand prints and hard water stains. I ordered coffee and then asked for milk and was promptly told that I needed to order coffee with milk if that's what I wanted. So the service is right there with the environment. The food and beverage manager should seriously take a look at this operation, it needs help.
  For the year 2015 this is just unacceptable for a International Hotel. I remember these conditions 15 years ago in China but this should not be today.
  With all of this said I would like to say that the shinning star of this hotel is the club lounge staff. Each night the put together a nice mix of food and beverage, service the customers with a smile and are on top of everything and really makeup for a lot of short comings. If it was not for the staff here I would have given a two star rating.
  There is also KTV next door and a new Mall in the area with a ton of shopping and restaurants. This was much needed and appreciated. Food choices cover everything Asian and one Western Dutch/German restaurant that wasn't bad at all.
  Wifi here is OK, open and free. This is not blocked and allows Google access too.
  I write this review in the hopes that management will see the hotel as guests do and update the hotel. The feeling I get is that the hotel is just getting to be too much and getting away from the staff.

• Nice Getaway

  Went for a family get away for the kids to enjoy the holiday. Great check in, nice rooms, huge nice bathroom and very comfy beds. Kids had fun in the huge pool but the children's pool was closed. Multiple hot tubs and beautiful pool area. Huge lobby. Breakfast buffet was really good with Chinese and lots of Western selections. Made to order omlets. Food was really good and service was very attentive. Bus back to downtown was convenient. The hotel is located on outer edge of Guangzhou but there is a small mall within ten minute walk with Pizza Hut, KFC, and a few local restsurants.

  This hotel is big and beautiful. Located in a quiet area. Service is great. The room is very nice. Bathroom is almost perfect. Breakfast is excellent. You cannot go wrong here. My room even had a private printer. Inside outside is very nice.

• Resort-like hotel with grey service

  I have been coming to the Crowne Plaza Science City hotel for over 5 years. It's a great hotel outside the city of Guangzhou and good for business travelers that work in the area.
  There is not much to do in this part of Guangzhou but they are trying to develop the area with new shopping malls and a subway line that should start operations in 2 years.
  One of the best things about this hotel is the consistency in the service, food quality in the restaurants, and cleanliness.

• A Good Conference Hotel in the Suburb

  I spent two nights in this hotel for a conference. The hotel is located in the Science Park which is in the eastern suburb of Guangzhou. From Hong Kong, I took the Intercity Through Train service to the Guangzhou East Railway Station. It took about 35mins travelling by taxi from the rail station and the price was around RMB 60. There are free shuttle buses to the station and you have to book with the concierge in advance.
  The room is clean and spacious with two double beds. The breakfast is good with wide range of varieties of choices, both western and Chinese. For lunch and dinner, the Chinese cuisine is much better than the western one. The price is reasonable which is about RMB 80-100 per person for a dinner. However, as an IHG member, I was told that I could not gain any point for food and beverage spending in the hotel which was quite disappointing because this arrangement was very different from its competitors, e.g. SPG membership. If you are not an IHG member and you join it at the spot, you will be offered two free drinks in the café. Then this is the most sarcastic point - you’ll get better reward if you are NOT an IHG member!! Within 10mins walking distance, you can reach a shopping mall with many other restaurants. They offer cheaper choices and more varieties of food.
  The conference facilities are generally good with many different sizes of conference rooms. The free Wifi is strong and smooth throughout the hotel. The reception, restaurants and concierge are very efficient to handle a large amount of conference guests at a short period of time.
  I tried the gym which was fine. The swimming pool should be good but it was so crowded and I didn’t use it. As it is located in the suburb, you can enjoy greenery and relatively fresh air around the hotel. I will recommend this hotel to others and you are reminded not to join the IHG in advance.
