A good stay with issues
Radi R
Shenzhen, China | Jul 5, 2025As we arrived and entered the lobby, there was no other soul then the receptionist. It felt like a ghost hotel. Bellboy is shy and smiles just a little. The room was very nice no problems there. Now, the breakfast buffet was hideous, the food quality was poor, the presentation was just poor in all aspects, the chefs are slow and not paying attention to guests and rather chat with the waiter. I am surprised that this breakfast buffet is so down even though it's managed by the same chef as in the sister hotel. The open kitchen is not clean. The service staff is friendly and quick. I'll choose the sister hotel over this one.

Hotel Amazing -Management to refine

Montreal, Quebec, | Oct 19, 2025 | Trip type: BusinessIts our 3rd time in this superb hotel . Rooms always very comfortable , great restaurants , especially ''Always Cantonese '' where its an experience everyday . Still suggest to carry your intelligent phone with google translator as it could be your best help in some numerous cases . But staff very kind .
We always stay for long trips , between 14 to 23 days . I still feel each time that this hotel miss a head manager as its essential for a hotel who wants to pretend for a 5 star standing . Even if staff very nice , we often feel that leadership is missing . -
A lovely restaurant - superb food

Christchurch | Apr 14, 2025 | Trip type: BusinessI had breakfast at this hotel in their "Always Cantonese" dining area. I can't say enough about how good this typical cantonese breakfast was - everything superbly fresh with lots of seafood and typical cantonese swwet, topped off with a lovely atmosphere, beautiful cutlery and superb service. The restaurant is adjacent to a lush garden with tropical plants and ponds. They even had very good cappucino which is very rare in China

The Place Is Good!

Orlando, Florida | Dec 22, 2025 | Trip type: BusinessThis hotel is really good; the junior suites are really comfortable, they have great service (including the business center), the buffet restaurants are exotic and different. It's definitely not like the typical carry-out food found in America. There's different types of vegetables, sauces, and a variety of meats. They have an hourly shuttle service to and from Canton Fair.

Palatial French hotel + Chinese management

HK | Oct 3, 2025 | Trip type: CouplesLike all Chinese run five star hotels in China, I suspect, there are unending differences between (a) the level of luxury of the physical place itself (Chateau Star River Haiyi Peninsula is genuinely 5 star IMO) and (b) the way the hotel is actually run.
Let me give a couple of examples. The restaurant where the buffet breakfast is served is very pleasant, the tables are set with very expensive cutlery and condiments fit for a king. But the various kettles of hot food are mislabled. The reason for this is the ignorant young kitchen hand. When he has a new dish ready he simply looks for a kettle that is empty and replaces it. He doesn't bother that the label under the kettle says BACON, yet he is replentishing it with TOMATOES.
Or, the view from the breakfast room is of the large outside swimming pool. It looks very pleasant and there is a large double doorway with steps, which is an integral part of the design of the hotel, which leads guests out to this pleasant area with its tropical planting and sun beds. Or it would if it wasn't permanently locked by hotel policy. The second large entrance from the hotel to the swimming pool is also locked. The assistant manager told me the reason is it is dangerous to have these doors open as guests could then have all sorts of accidents around the swimming pool. The only way anybody can access the swimming pool is to go out of the hotel, enter the fitness club next door, go down a narrow stairway (like a servants staircase with one corner where the head-heigh is limited and there is a warning 'watch your head'), then along a corridor, into the men or woman's changing room, through the automatic showers that fall at the exit, through the feet-wash, and out past the indoor pool. My girlfriend and I found this out on our first day but we were determined. She didn't want to swim but still had to endure a small soaking as she ducked past the auto-shower and then the foot-wash. It's impossible to carry anything out to the swimming pool like a book or an ipad without it getting soaked. When we were finished we banged on the doorway to the hotel and had numerous conversations with staff on both sides of the door. It took about ten minutes before someone finally opened the door to let my girlfriend into the hotel (staff can use the door easily they just swipe their key card!).
Last example, the balcony doors of the lovely rooms are locked. This means they are like prisons, at least to the mind of a Western guy like myself. I don't want to live in a sealed room with air conditioning when it's a lovely sunny comfortable day outside. As we were given our room the bellboy mumbled something about the balcony doors being locked because of noise from outside. We said nothing. But on our second day we revolted. I made a big fuss and eventually an assistant manager unlocked the doors for us. It made the room 100% nicer to have the doors slide open and be able to step out onto the balcony and look around and turn off the horrible air conditioning. The AM told me the doors were locked for satety. We had to sign a disclaimer letter agreeing we would use the balcony at our own risk.
So, while the building and it's fittings are beautifully made and designed, the management has conspired through rules, regulations and ignorant staff to almost spoil everything. I won't even start about the unending 24 hour piano music which was being fed into all parts of the hotel and from which you couldn't escape, even at the fitness club and swimming-pool.
But that said I did end up having some affection for the hotel. Many of the staff were willing to help and had a nice attitude, although many didn't. There were as many charming aspects of hotel life here as baffling and absurd ones.
But do be prepared for the juxtaposition between the Louis XIV luxury of the hotel building and the lack of sense of the management!
