Good Hotel, not so good location
swazzer
Kathmandu, Nepal | Sep 24, 2025It's a good hotel with good service. The breakfast, although not extensive was good. However, the location was not ideal and far from major points of interest. Looks like its more popular with the locals than with the tourists.

Great view on the 16th floor
Derikasan
Zhaoqing, China | Sep 19, 2025 | Trip type: BusinessClean and spacious rooms. Big enough to be a holiday flat. When booking ask for the 16th floor odd number room e.g 1621,3,4,etc. That side you get to see the view of the city. The bad news is the car parking can be a problem as it is always full. Good news is, there is a multistorey car park right next door.

Nice hotel w/ wonderful reception staff
fostermamabear88
Daly City, California | Jul 9, 2025 | Trip type: BusinessThe reception staff, facade, lobby and restaurant is excellent! Front desk staff couldn't be more welcoming specially Simon. We were allowed to check-in early for a minimal extra charge. Lobby was grand and beautifully decorated w/ fresh flowers. Room was big and comfortable. It is also next to a beautiful park. Only downside is that it is bit far from Pedestrian Street & shopping areas. The area is surrounded w/ industrial stores. I would stay here again. By taxi, It is approx. 40 Yuan to downtown area- not bad.

Third time unlucky
Midlifetourist
Wigan | May 3, 2025 | Trip type: BusinessI have stayed in this hotel on two previous occasions and given it 5 Stars each time, although on both occasions there were a couple of minor niggles. On this occasion I am being less generous and only rating it as a 3.
On my first stay at The Cavan, reception kept me waiting over half an hour for my room to be ready, even though it was past the check in time. I forgave them, because the room was so nice. Last time, everything was perfect until we checked out and they charged us for a broken saucer. We did break it - we never attempted to deny it, but a US$20 charge for a saucer after we had spent a lot of money booking the room for 6 nights, seemed petty and given the prices in China, over inflated. Again we let it go
So let's get to the nuts and bolts of this stay.
The hotel is not in the centre and is in more a residential, slightly run down area of Guangzhou. This has never bothered me as taxis are cheap, the hotel is 400 metres from a station and the metro is super cheap and efficient. However the biggest bonus is that we stay to visit the Canton Fair and the hotel runs a free shuttle bus to and from the trade fair with complimentary water in both directions.
Once again reception kept me waiting, although only for 10 or 15 minutes, however it would be really nice if someone came to get you when your room was ready rather than you keep having to go back and check. You cannot really fault the rooms at the price. They are generous in size with comfortable big beds, a bath and separate shower and a big screen television that has a handful of western channels. Wifi is free and been quick on previous occasions, but not this time in room 1712. The rooms have decent air conditioning and a luxury feel. Room service is thorough and reliable and it has always been a quiet and relaxed place to stay. There is an outdoor swimming pool, which is clean and also a spa, however most of the spa services are for an additional charge. Breakfast has always been complimentary and there are plenty of options for eastern or western tastes. The hotel has three restaurants, two are Chinese and one caters for western visitors and the buffet in that is spectacular.
So why only a rating of 3 this time. It's all about the attitude in reception. As i said there have been issues on my previous stays and this time whilst I was at reception and asking a question about using the pool - the lady on reception blanked me and starting talking to someone on the phone. As someone without any language skills at all, I understand that things can be lost in translation and allow for that - but this lady was simply rude and that is unacceptable. That and the slow wifi merits 3 stars.
Would I still recommend this hotel? Yes for sure, it's great value for people visiting the Canton Fair, but they really need to brush up their skills on reception .
