Overall Great but, Some Revisions Needed
EvanDaviesDesign
San Luis Obispo, California | May 13, 2025 | Trip type: BusinessHi! I booked the Mels Weldon because of its location. I saw it on goole maps, noted it was only a few km from a local materials market and booked it one night for me and two other associates.
The Pros --
Staying in a skycraper -- I really had no idea this hotel was the big 60+ story skyscraper in Humenzhen. It's the only building that tall in town so even if you're on a lower floor, you still have a great view. My room was on the 53rd floor which (to date) is the highest hotel room I've ever stayed in. I don't take baths but who could resist soaking in a tub with a commanding view of the streets below?
Huge room -- Felt more like a suite then a room with a large bedroom, office area, massive bathroom complete with walk-in closet style dressing area, double sink vanity and separated bath/shower/toilet. Would have loved to have "moved in" a little more but was only there for a night.
Great Service -- The front desk was great as was the concierge, who recommended a real locals spot to a bunch of western-looking types.
Location -- In spite of some reviewers saying it was in a dodgy spot, I'd say it was in a vibrant spot full of REAL China, not a whitewashed expat neighborhood. No one harassed us, we walked around extensively and while there was some blight, I never felt in danger. Decent street food and tons of local malls/shops to haggle with often comically going after famous brands.
Breakfast with a View -- Breakfast is on one of the highest floors so you'll have a nice view even if you got a room with a low floor. Breakfast was standard for a higher end Chinese Hotel, we got there early, almost had the place to ourselves but when 9-o-clock rolled around the masses showed up. I'd recommend an early start.
The Cons --
Fit & Finish -- You could feel the place is not in first order even if the aesthetics are still pleasing. Keeping up on a 60-story building must be no small task but I think it's fair to point out that upkeep of the rooms and in the gym area could be a lot better. This hotel can't be that old and yet little things like loose tiles in the shower, shower heads caked with hard water deposits spraying every which way, excessive wear in the furniture, desks, chairs, etc. The hot tubs in the locker room were out of commission and the general state of the men's locker room was nothing short of gross. Towels thrown everywhere, some guy sitting (basically naked) with his feet up on the non-working hot tubs snoozing, waking up and spitting everywhere. Windows so caked with general grime it was somewhat hard to see outside (it's China, I get it but still).
Internet Security -- Please, look into better internet security. I have never gotten so many virus blocks in one hotel. Every 5 seconds my scan picked something else up. It got to the point where I just didn't use it.
Dark -- I like a dark room and the aesthetics of the rooms are nice. That said, as many other reviewers have pointed out, it is hard to get light when you need it. It's a game of "find the switch." It would be nice to be able to turn the lights on when you need it, like when you're checking out and you want to make sure you're not leaving anything behind. Or you want t make sure the room is clean. Things like that.
I hope this helps! I always believe in giving honest, informative reviews. In spite of the cons, I will likely stay here again in the future.
Thanks! -
It hasn't disappointed us!

Edinburgh, Scotland, United Kingdom | Mar 31, 2025 | Trip type: CouplesMy wife and I joined a local tour arranged by an agency in Hong Kong. Not giving too much hope for a one-night stay at first because we read quite a few bad cmments about this hotel. But since the price was good and it was over a long holiday, who cares! But everything I later experienced did give me surprises. Our guide arranged everything for us, nice and easy. Hotel service is good and I can see warm smiles everywhere. The room is clean, tidy and contemporary. Food is delicious and covers a wide range of cuisine from East to West. I strongly recommend the 61/F buffets. The air-con in some of the rooms broke down when we checked in. After our immediate report to the tour guide, the hotel technician repaired it and it took no time for us to enjoy a great sleep. There are a few nittie grittie shortfalls but they will heal as everyone moves on. None has stood in our way to enjoy a wonderful experience!

Dodgy neighborhood

Hong Kong, China | Jul 11, 2025 | Trip type: Friends getawayWe are walking around near the hotel at around 5 pm. Streets were dirty. Bikes were coming from both directions and we missed one. A woman jumped off from a bike and started to attack us, swore and slapped us on faces and bodies. No one tried to help but an old man. This is the worst travelling experiences we ever had given that we had been many different countries in our lives.

Big hotel in a Dodgy neighbourhood

Jul 11, 2025 | Trip type: Friends getawayThis is the biggest hotel in Humen but streets nearby are dirty and residents around are rude.
We were wondering around in the area, bicycles were coming from both sides, we murmured ourselves about the situation and a woman jumped off from her bike, slapping our face and body and asking for apology without reasoning. We have never met such uncivilized resident (to tourists) despite that we traveled around the world all our lives. -
Not Bad for Dong Guan
FitBizTraveler
Chicago, Illinois | Apr 23, 2025 | Trip type: BusinessThis is a pretty typical China mainland "luxury" hotel. The furnishings, decor, etc., are all designed to look fancy, but the materials are so shoddy that even though it's a relatively new hotel, it's showing serious wear (stained carpeting, decorative leather wall panels all beat up at eye level(how does that even happen???), table top and glass surfaces starting to tarnish, wallpaper bubbling, etc.). Housekeeping was kind of a mixed bag--there was a literally and figuratively gross oversight when I first got to my room, but after that was remedied, it seemed okay. The staff speaks minimal English, and the restaurants are okay by my admittedly picky standards.
The one thing that I absolutely couldn't get over was the stench. Good gawd, what happened here? It was OVERWHELMINGLY musty and had just an awful smell. Every time I opened the door to my room, I felt like I was walking into a cloud of mold. Despite having AC, the room was constantly humid (my sweaty gym clothes from Day 1 were still damp on Day 5, even though I hung them to dry).
The saving grace is the gym!!! It was spacious, clean, fully-equipped, and essentially all the equipment was in good working condition. There are a number of cardio machines, strength equipment, dumbbells, yoga mats, and a large pool. It was a fabulous surprise for a Dong Guan hotel!
