• Dissapointing Stay in Chengdu

  This is supposed to be a five star hotel in China. By western standards it is really a 3 to 4 max. star. At check in there were at least five receptionists and none of them could acknowledge us. They all just continue to work on whatever and ignore the people checking in. Supposedly a sales person floats around the front desk but can't seem to get the job done either.We were told there was no hotel manager on duty by this young lady either. It took almost an hour to get checked in and finally into a decent room. We requested a non smoking room and when we finally received our room key and walked into the room we realize we are in a smoking room. We called down to the front desk, they send a bellman named Steven who happened to speak perfect english. Steven is sent with a key to another room only to find out the the non smoking room was also used as a smoking room. The third room worked. In my opinion, Steven should be working the front desk since he is able to speak english which should be a requirement for a 5 star hotel. People who stay at this hotel leave their room doors wide open with loud TV on. Breakfast is very poor. Not much selection. Children run all over the restaurant unsupervised. Asked for a latte and told that was an extra charge. Very hard to get a regular cup of coffee as well. Must not have this on hand which is unusual for a large city hotel. If you are looking for a quiet place this is not the place. WonTon is pretty week at this hotel restaurant as well. Beds are fair. Baths are good. Not many places to go to from this hotel.

  Big rooms, average service, pretty nice breakfast, good location. Need to be more clean to reach 5 stars, but totally clean rooms is the big problem in all Chinese hotels. Price seemed to be a little high.

  Have been staying there three times. very practical, well located, quite friendly staff even if struggling with english - at least some of the employees at front desk. But all in all, a good choice and nice value for the money.
  Clean, safe. On of the best i have tried in China.

  My stay here was organized by conference I was attending. Room was quite comfortable, although like much construction in China the fit and finish leaves a lot to be desired. The shower in particular had issues of its door not fitting correctly, tiling not sloped for water drainage, and tile cut markings made with indelible marker on the outside face.
  Interesting experience one evening being approached by a call girl at the elevator bank. Not sure if this is a normal hotel service, as the room had a nice selection of condoms available for purchase.
  Central location with lots within walking distance, or metro a block away at Tianfu square.
  Minimal English capabilities of staff, but sufficient to get by. Don't be in a rush to check out - they will want to send someone from housekeeping to check your room.

  Let's take a look at the positive stuff first:
  -Clean, spacious, polite staff.
  -Many choices at the buffet restaurant on the 2nd floor for every meal during the day.
  -The best beds in China!
  -Floor to ceiling windows in the rooms.
  -Shower with rain heads and bath tub with bath salts provided.
  -Window between bathroom and bedroom, allowing for more light.
  Now the negatives:
  -Nobody at the reception desk speaks english.
  -The pool was closed (which was ok after all since it was located at the parking lot!)
  -Two of us got food poisoning (we hadn't stepped out of the hotel)
  -We had booked in advance for two people to stay for an extra night. When we arrived we found out that the price for that night would be 60% more expensive than what we had been paying for the previous nights. They also charged us a "security deposit" that was the full price of our stay for the extra night plus 50% more! We decided to change the booking and take a double room instead of two singles for that night. Well, it had less space than the single rooms, no bathtub, the fridge was locked, and the air-condition was stuck at 16C so we froze our behinds off.
