Great traditional Beijing experience
Matthew T
Shanghai, China | May 17, 2025 | Trip type: FamilyWe stayed here with my mom, dad (in their 60s) and my g/f.
The pros:
A very authentic hutong - Beijing experience. The atmosphere is a great as it can be. The neighbours are 'real' Beijingese and no touristy feel. There is a major road 5 minutes away with many shops, restaurants and everything you need. Another good pizza place about 3 minutes down the road. Beds are comfortable, rooms are little small but with traditional Chinese furniture and a very comfortable bed. Owner and workers are friendly (but hardly any English). In their basement, they have a large area for tea. They will help organize tours for you too. They provide us with free beer, drinks (although that could be from our booking mix-up). Breakfast is decent, toast, jam, fried eggs for western; congee, salty vegetables, steamed buns with green onion and hard-boiled egg for Chinese.
The cons:
-Very little English. Unless you are travelling with Chinese people, it may be hard to communicate.
-Location is great but hard to find at first, most taxis won't drive down the hutong, you have to find it on foot.
-Mix up while booking. We wanted two rooms but only booked us for one. It didn't amount to anything, we were lucky there was enough room.
Ideal for:
-Chinese or people with Chinese heritage
-Expats living in China
-Anyone who wants a true Beijing experience
Not suitable:
-People who want for 'western' hotel experience and rooms
Would give 5 stars if it weren't for the booking mix-up. Definitely recommend and will stay here again if we return to Beijing. -
Comfortable and friendly hutong hotel
Dutch_Travllr
Netherlands | Mar 20, 2025 | Trip type: Solo travelBeing in Beijing for the second time I decided again not to stay in one of the big hotel chains but go for the traditional hutong hotel again after last year's good experience. The hotel is just five minutes away from busy streets full of little shops and bars and of course the Drum and Bell Towers. For exploring the city using Andingmen subway station is the nearest to the hotel (10 minute walk).
Finding the hotel was a bit of a challenge for the taxi driver but after a small de-four we found the owner waiting at the entrance of his hotel. From that point on all communication went through sign language or via a translation app on his iPad. His daughter however did speak English but was not always around. They were both very helpful in proving help and assistance.
The hotel room was nice and clean and could fit two people nicely. Bathroom was modern and clean. Breakfast is a standard fried egg and three sandwiches for non-Asians, but cannot tell the contents of the Chinese version.
All in all a comfortable and pleasant stay! -
Excellent!

London, United Kingdom | Aug 7, 2025 | Trip type: CouplesI stayed here with my boyfriend in May 2013.
The propety is located down a small hutong which joins with some amazing streets full or bars, restaurants and shops.
The rooms were immaculate, the breakfast was brilliant and the staff were very welcoming and gave great service throughout our stay.
If staying here you must visit the guitar bar round the corner for some brillaint live entertainment and fantastic drinks. -
Unusual hutong hotel
Himalaya-to-Carolina
Durham, North Carolina | Jul 30, 2025 | Trip type: CouplesAs others have noted, this is a lovely, small hotel located in a quiet hutong in Beijing. If you're looking for a traditional Western hotel with a big exercise room, restaurant and other amenities, this is not the place for you. But if you want to experience Beijing in a more genuine way, it's a fun place to stay. The managers speak very limited English so, if you'll need to look elsewhere for help with directions or other advice. The "Western breakfast" gets monotonous but there are some good restaurants nearby.

clean, friendly, peaceful oasis from the heat

Melbourne, Australia | Jul 31, 2025 | Trip type: Solo travelWe arrivied on the night of the worst storm in Beijing for decades, the hotel had arranged transport for us and the driver waited 6 hours for us, thank goodness. This was a glimpse of the standard of service to come. My daughter (10) and I felt at home from the first moment, great location, walking distance to so many historical sights. English is a problem with the older owners but technology helps google translate solves most communication issue, the young girl (english speaking) there during the day is thier big assest, she walked us out to the main road to catch a taxi helped carring our bags. I would highly recommend Ji House to anyone wanting a relaxed more homely experience of Beijing. It is the first time after other trips to Beijing that I felt I was getting to understand Beijing previous hotel experiences have been too cold, too similiar to anywhere else in the world, I don't feel connected to the city like I did staying in the Hutong
