Great location - room needs painting
zimbotravels
Harare, Zimbabwe | Nov 5, 2025We stayed for 5 nights - loved the location and proximity to a high street with excellent restaurants. An amazing cultural experience for my family.
Staff were VERY helpful and accommodating - and in general the facility was good. Our room was in desperate need of a painting - so it tarnished an otherwise fantastic experience. DISAPPOINTING -
Tranquil metropolitan location

Jun 4, 2025 | Trip type: CouplesStayed for three nights weekdays. The hotel standards are were basic. Small breakfast, appliances not working very well (AC, TV, hot water where somehow randomly functioning). But the atmosphere is excellent. They have an underground bar accessible only on invitation, which gives you a nostalgic impression of Beijing. Also the furniture is very old - fashioned and classy. You have to ring a bell to get inside. Reception is 24 hrs open though. Location is 10 minutes away from metro. You can walk to most important city sights within 45 minutes. Great hot pots in the area. Very recommendable!

For history
Haineng
Singapore, Singapore | Oct 5, 2025 | Trip type: CouplesHonestly speaking, this wasn't a place for comfortable staying. If you don't know the history or the culture you probably find this place rather disappointing. This place is the former residence of Yoshiko Kawashima, who was a princess of Qing Dynasty and a espionage of Japan during early 18th. Furnitures there all got strong history background. Not suitable for those who looking for exotic experience, visit for the real history.

So special but needs some improvement

Sep 21, 2025 | Trip type: Solo travelI am very torn about this review.
It is without a doubt a very special place to stay. All the details, the books, the furniture, photos, revolvers, telephones, paintings, sculptures - it's taking you back into the Mao age as per the hotel's promise. The courtyard setup around the tree is beautiful.
The staff was great - they were always very friendly and when I couldn't find the pace initially (be careful if you book through hotels.com as they display the location in the wrong street) they picked me up. Breakfast was great.
I stayed in the Mao Suite which I believe to be more spacious than the other rooms, it has a little seating area.
What has been mentioned before and I couldn't fail to notice is the lack of cleanliness, and I am not talking about the dusty overall charme of the place. It's such a basic requirement and here it was lacking to the degree that I felt uncomfortable. The plaid on the bed had a lot of fresh / unwashed stains. There were random used Kleenex in the room. The floor in the room was dirty enough that I would use my shoes coming out straight from the shower.
This has been mentioned several times so I can only guess management is not following this forum.
Was I to return to Beijing I would definitely want to stay in a Hutong again, but unfortunately I would look to stay at a different one. Which is a shame because the place itself really has so much character and could be so much more so easily.
