Small hidden gem close to attractions

Muscat, Oman | May 1, 2025 | Trip type: CouplesSmall managed hotel close to many sites and attractions. Helpful staff and sober but eatable breakfast. Friendly staff who upgraded us from a small tiny room to a split level room. In the middle of Beijing a nice place to stay for exploring the city. The hotel is hidden in a hutong. From to metro stations easy to reach.

A Realistic Chinese Experience!
Virginia P
Apr 19, 2025 | Trip type: FamilyThis was our first trip to China and we did not want a western hotel experience. Our daughter, who works in Beijing, suggested the Hill Lily Courtyard. It was just what we wanted.
Customer service was great - when I had questions prior to arrival, they were answered promptly and easily by staff. We were met at the airport and driven to the inn for a reasonable fee.
Our room was not overly spacious but it was fine - and they moved in a portable bed when our daughter was able to spend a couple of nights.
They also gave great suggestions for where to dine and the hotel staff was very friendly and helpful.
The courtyard was a lovely place to relax and sometimes eat a meal. The other guests were also friendly.
Breakfast provided the option of a full Chinese breakfast or a western breakfast. Both were quite good.
The location is also close to the subway and several good restaurants.佰禾天行, 销售总监 at Hill Lily Courtyard, responded to this reviewDear guests,
Thank you so much for loving our hotel and we will do all the things better and better. Wish you come back again. -
Great location, but amenities lacking
Rosemarie7
Kelowna, BC | Nov 15, 2025This hotel is within walking distance of Tienanmen Square, the Forbidden City and two concert hall/theatres, plus shopping and subway. This saves sightseers a lot of time and effort and probably money, because Beijing is a difficult city to travel around in, due to the heavy traffic. Plus you'll see the authentic hutong neighborhood of old Beijing. However, there are drawbacks which may outweigh this, depending on your preferences and your experiences with Chinese hotels. The hotel is located down an alley and taxi drivers have trouble finding it and you'll have to walk the few meters down the alley to get to it. The rooms face a central courtyard and don't have modern insulation so sound privacy could be an issue. The rooms are definitely small. The bathrooms are tiny and if you're young enough to enjoy the see-through curtains dividing the bathroom to the bedroom, good for you! Also you need to be limber enough to either crawl up the ladder to the loft bedroom or out of a bed which is pushed against the wall (can only get out on one side). Our blow dryer didn't work, we were issued Chinese-size rations of toilet paper, there was no coffee in the bedroom and breakfast was not served at 7:30 am as advertised, and we should have specified a Chinese breakfast rather than their best efforts at a Western one. (I'd have preferred to not have breakfast there at all, but it was included in the price and with the exception of the day we checked in, none of the staff could speak enough English to negotiate a change in price.) The young staff were seldom to be found at the reception desk. There was no coffee provided in the bedroom or at breakfast. We carry our own coffee packets with us -- the maid didn't clean or change the cups in our room. I usually snort at nit-picky reviews on TripAdvisor, but there were enough little things to contend with at this hotel to make it worth cautioning fellow travelers. If you want a fully Western four star hotel experience, I doubt you'd be happy here. However, location and atmosphere were definitely pluses.

Authentic Hutong Experience
stirfrybokchoy
Oct 4, 2025 | Trip type: Solo travelThere is no better way to learn about the Hutong people and live like a real Beijinger than to stay in the Hutong! Everyday I was walking amongst real Beijingers, buying boazi fresh from the steamer in the morning, shopping at the neighborhood grocery, and eating with the locals at dinner.
This hotel is really, really nice for being in the hutong. It is like staying at a bohemian, boutique style B&B. One staff member spoke pretty good english, the other staff not so much. But they did have laundry service, a bike you can rent, and connections for tours around the city and to the Great Wall. It felt very safe and the front door of the hotel was always locked, and the front desk person was always there to open the door, even late at night.
The hutong is very safe, I always felt safe every where in Beijing for that matter.
This place is a 10 minute walk to Tienamen and Qianmen, 15 to 20 to forbidden city. 5 minutes to the Hepingmen metro stop. It is a great location. Lots of restaurants all around filled with locals. Over the week I stayed, I don't think I encountered another western person while I was in the neighborhood getting dinner, shopping for groceries, etc.
The other guests at the hotel were a mix of chinese, american, and european travelers.
If you want a western style full service hotel, with english speaking staff, within nice and tidy environs, this place is not for you! Yes, hutong men sometimes sit around shirtless (hey the weather is hot!), women are chilling on a stool having a beer, folks are slurping noodles, little kids pee in the storm drain.
Some of the things you will see in the neighborhood will surprise/shock a western person. But maybe we need to ask ourselves what makes us right and them wrong? If you want to dive into the full experience, live like the locals, and be part of the neighborhood, this is an amazing experience.

LONG ZHUTANG BOUTIQUE HOTEL (LZT) is an aesthetic up market boutique hotel set in the very heart of central Beijing. It is ideally located at 34 Dongxin Lianzi Hutong, Xicheng District, Beijing. Due to its superb location, many famous attractions of the capital can be reached within walking distance. To the north is the exclusive red-walled Zhongnanhai. To the east is the vast Tiananmen Square flanked by the enormous Forbidden Imperial Palace, Chairman Mao's Mausoleum, The Great Hall of People, and The Modern National Museum. At a stone throw distance, to the south and west of the hotel, are the well known Quanjude Roasted Duck, Dashila, the cultural street of LiuLiChang and the busy Shopping Center of Xidan.
LONG ZHUTANG BOUTIQUE HOTEL (LZT)was once a private residence of an elite Beijingnese family dating back to 1911 when Dr. Sun Yat Sen first founded The People Republic of China (PRC). It is recently restored and managed by LZT BOUTIQUE HOTEL Corporation. The whole property's architecture has been renovated to its current luxurious standard of modern amenities. Yet, LZT BOUTIQUE HOTEL still retains its original classical Chinese flavor of the elegant past. The complex consists of three main graceful wings surrounding a central spacious garden. The dark wooden brown color of the building's structure echoes the color of the inherent peaceful earth. In contrast, the vibrant colors of green trees, lustrous plants, leafy vines, and robustly colorful flowers give the central courtyard its reverberant and kaleidoscopic richness. -
