  Walking distance to tiananmen square,forbidden city,wangfujing and east tiananmen subway. If you tour the forbidden city, u can choose to exit at east gate. The hotel is only 10min walk from east gate. Basic amenities, clean room and friendly and helpful staff.

  Cozy Location, very helpful english speaking staff, very close to forbidden city and tiananmen square and wangfujing locality.. clean room, clean toilet.. a nice traditional courtyard... very much alright for compromising mentality tourists

  We loved this hotel and its location and felt it was just the perfect hotel for travelers like us but before doing a review I asked the desk clerk (or manager, I'm not sure what she is) if it was okay because I had seen in a prior review that they didn't accept Westerners thought I might have just snuck by using Agoda. She was surprised and upset. She had wondered why this year there have been so few foreigners when there were so many in prior years! In fact, one of the goals of the owner was to decorate it in a way to give us a feel and appreciation for early 20th-century China. So yes, they welcome foreigners. She also spoke quite a lot of English as did her backup and was sweet and helpful even before she became extremely grateful to me for clearing up the mystery. (I didn't ask until we are ready to leave). We prefer inexpensive hotels but with atmosphere and a sense of place and this one has it in spades, yet the bathrooms have modernized so you don't have to give up having an enclosed shower and being able to set your water temperature :-) It's also incredibly convenient. Google maps shows it inside the Forbidden Palace. Actually, its across Nanchizi street from the Imperial Ancestral Temple in a hutong but requires very little walking. Our 1st cab driver's GPS found it easily and our second didn't have one but knew the street. Look for the "_ing Du" Hostel's white, lit, sign (I took a picture but can't read it!). Across from it is the alley. Or look down each alley across from the public restrooms for a lit sign that says "58" (yuan for foot massage). If it's daylight, the sign on the alley is "Denglongku Hutong". You walk less than 100 feet back to a sign that says "Best Year". Turn right and walk maybe 20 feet to the entrance. Other details. There is no restaurant but there is a coffee maker that grinds the beans and turns them into expresso for about $1. There is was a refrigerator of drinks that isn't working very well in the lobby and a good little refrigerator in our room. I think all of it is a/c since the courtyard is glassed in and cool. Certainly our room was except the alcove. There were plenty of thoughtful touches like a power strip, etc and we liked the mixed rice hull? and fiber fill pillows. Traditional underneath and soft on top like the hotel :-)
  The loveliest suite is under the eaves. It has a soft king-sized bed plus 3 twins with normal Chinese-hard innerspring mattresses. Also a refrigerator. It barely has wi-fi signal...only in the little ante-room which also has a rock hard traditional bed we used as a bench. It is up some steep stairs so we left about 100 lb of stuff we were carrying back to our international assignent downstairs and took the 80 lb we needed up. They also kept the big suitcases for us (for free) for a few weeks in between our 2 stays.

  I agree with the comments of the previous reviewer. My parents were put in a very small room and changed to another room on request, however the new room had a really dirty carpet. My room was fine except the shower in the bathroom was broken so you couldn't adjust the temperature. This was a particular problem as the water always seemed to run at either boiling hot or freezing cold.
  On the other hand the two people working on reception were really friendly and helpful, for example arranging a taxi for us to the Great Wall. Another positive is the excellent location near to the Forbidden City. The place is also very charming with a nice central location. The price we paid was just a bit more than youth hostel level so overall not too bad but needs improvements in cleaning and maintenance.

  Took almost half an hour to find this place on a cold morning at 7 deg cel! In the end, took a cab. Only checked in to the room in the afternoon, bathroom was very basic, and the room was cold. Bed wasn't that fantastic..
