Location, Location, Location

Camberley, United Kingdom | Oct 12, 2025 | Trip type: CouplesHere, like half of the World with G as part of a tour. This is their base hotel for the start of tours, and you can see why.
But, I normally travel independently and if you are one of those travellers, then this is certainly a place worth considering. The prime reason is location - a couple of stops on the Metro to most places and connects easily with the Airport and places like the Summer Place in the north west.
The place (for older readers) has an Intourist "Soviet feel" from the late 1980s, eitomised by the rather bizarre restaurant, which is something akin to an Adams family TV set, complete with staff that act the part. We went once for breakfast and then discovered the miriad of other local places to eat and decided, due to the surlyness and brusque nature of the staff (they started clearing service well before we had finished) to not return.
Our room on the 14th floor was ok - one would say tired in the UK and in need of a refurb, but all the facilities for a 3 star hotel there and for circa £50 a night Room Only, fair enough.
Wifi good - not the hotels fault that various sites blocked - decided not to go the VPN Route.
All in all a good call by G and if I was coming here by myself in the future I would return - and that dear listener, says it all. -
Near Tourist Sites

Ingleside, Illinois, United States | Sep 30, 2025 | Trip type: Solo travelThis hotel is located within walking distance of several Tourist sites (Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven, Lama Temple, Pearl Market). Public transportation, the subway, can get you to the rest of them. The subway is located less than 50 meters from the front door of the hotel. This is a good hotel to use as a "base camp" for touring Beijing. Although the staff has limited English skills, they do try to be accommodating. Their restaurant, Maxim's, provides reasonable western meals. However, there are numerous restaurants within easy walking distance that provide western style of meals if you are looking just to fill the void in your stomach.

Pretty average 3 star hotel
flying_kiwi1986
London | Sep 15, 2025 | Trip type: Friends getawayStayed here for two nights recently as part of a G Adventures tour. This place is pretty average and what I would consider to be at the lower end of the three star hotel spectrum.
The hotel is older style and quite run down. The rooms are a bit damp (despite quite a few windows for light) and smoky, we stayed on the non smoking floor but I think people were still smoking in their rooms, I believe this is quite common in China. It would have been good if we could have opened the windows for some air.
This hotel had good wifi, which we could access in both the lobby and our room. However do remember that many websites are blocked in China, e.g Facebook, Google generally (maps, gmail, etc), plus a whole lot more.
The location was good, close to a large shopping mall, a supermarket and metro line 2.
We had a working fridge in our room. The bed was very hard. The shower had excellent water pressure, however the whole bathroom was soaked following a shower.
Staff spoke limited English.
Taxi from the airport cost us 120 CNY. -
Mediocre three-star hotel

Los Angeles, California | Sep 14, 2025 | Trip type: Solo travelLike a lot of people posting on this forum, I stayed here as part of a G Adventures China tour.
It has the advantage of a convenient location with lots of malls and restaurants nearby and the metro station right in front. It's close to the Forbidden City and the other central tourist sights. It's a tower so you have a little bit of distance from the street noise. That's about it.
The in-house restaurant, Maxim's, is average and has seen better days. Actually, the whole hotel too needs a top to bottom renovation!
The room was rather plain and average in all respects. The bed was hard, of course, but that's a constant problem in China.
The biggest downside by far was the awful sewer-like smell emanating from the bathroom, for which I had to keep the door closed at all times and minimize my time in there. This is a problem I also encountered in other older hotels in China on my first trip in 2008 with Ritz Tours. I suspect these hotels may not have the traps in the sewer lines that Western hotels use to suppress sewer gas and that may be what's coming into the bathroom. Opening the window to ventilate the entire room helped a bit, but then that brought in more of the street noise. Because I was only there for two nights and was coming in from a 12-hour flight I didn't bother to switch rooms, but it was certainly annoying.
