SHATAN HOTEL, BEIJING
313globetrotter
Singapore, Singapore | Sep 28, 2025 | Trip type: Solo travelThis is the hotel for visitors, who like to have a real experience of the Chinese culture! The hotel has a three (3) star rating, and is one of the better ones in this area, which is flooded with budget hotels and guest houses catering mainly for budget travellers and packaged tours for Chinese from the provinces. The alley is full of small Chinese restaurants and stalls and shops selling all sorts of items. The prices of most items sold here are very economical (example: a cup of freshly made soy juice is about US$0.50; it will cost about US$2-3 in other tourist spots!!!). The area is jammed packed with locals and Chinese tourists during the morning and evening, buying foods and other items. Transportation is very good, as there are many taxis and public transports around. The hotel needs some up-grading. The room is acceptable. The staff are very friendly and helpful, especially the marketing executive, Ms Yang Yu Jing and Sales Manager. Good value for money !

Nice, low budget hotel.

Mandal | Aug 21, 2025 | Trip type: FamilyStayed here with my middle son (9yrs) and my parents (70 yrs) here for 6 nights in april 2015. The Hotel isn't all that and tends to be a bit worn and had some issues with the seversystem/waterlocks. But if you'r not too picky its really good value for the money. Would recommend uppgrading the room, though.
The things we appreciated:
It's in an houtong area, and theres a market area just down the street where locals meet, eat and do their shopping. We loved this. We rented an electric bike just around corner from the hotel, and drove around for hours, sightseeing a large part of downtown Beijing this way. My sons favourite part of the trip.
Its close to the forbidden city and the Jingshan park.
Its a little walk to the subway, but there are taxis all around and they are cheap, so that wasnt really a big deal (and is healthy to walk.) My parents didn't complain, even when we walked the 1,5 km to the subway.
All in all a great stay, and would def come back. -
Decent Hotel

Manchester, United Kingdom | Aug 12, 2025 | Trip type: CouplesThis hotel is a fair way from the Metro (DONGSI), plan your walking route using Google before you leave for China or use maps.google.cn if you are already in China or you may struggle to find it. You can also take buses 103 or 109 for one stop (a long way in China!!) from the bus stop to the right as you exit Dongsi station using the North West Exit (E). The cost is around 20p (2 Yuan) each and is well worth it.
The hotel is well presented and comfortable. Be aware that you will be expected to pay a deposit even though you may not be told this in advance. This all went fine though. The rooms are generally well presented, just a couple of small maintenance issues but nothing major that will spoil a stay.
Breakfast is fine, Chinese food, little Western (I would generally not comment upon the lack of Western food, but because of the food and its lack of variety in China, this becomes something most people crave for!), but good quality. Just don't leave going down until the last minute as things run out.
Location wise, you are really close to the Forbidden Palace exit (though the entrance and T Square are about 2 - 2.5km walk) and the street appears to be celebrated by Chinese, as there are lots of tourists at the weekend, lots of eateries and shops on the street and really close to a park. Once you're acquainted with the area, there is a second, slightly closer Metro but this requires weaving in and out of a maze of backstreets with no clear mapping and a good general sense of direction required. I would not recommend arriving to this station (NANLUOGUXIANG), but going to DONGSI instead.
In general, a good stay, though don't pay 'top whack' for this hotel. -
Great location

Southampton, United Kingdom | Jul 28, 2025 | Trip type: CouplesThe hotel itself was a little walk away from the metro. We had read on TripAdvisor that the hotel was hard to find, so we marked it on our map in advance and still nearly managed to miss it! I don't think Google Maps is able to access the smaller roads in China! When checking in, the receptionist requested payment even though we had already paid online in advance. This was a little hard to explain with the language barrier but eventually we got there. The room was very spacious although a little dark. We booked a tour to The Great Wall through the hotels booking agent which was fantastic to see. However, the booking didn't include what we booked but some extra activities including a tea house visit and the Jade Museum where the staff, along with the tour guide, make you feel like you're obligated to buy something. Not included in the price was a 35% tip for the tour guide and the driver which we were only told that we had to pay when they picked us up. The driving wasn't worthy of any tip, apart from getting us back alive! We were happy to get back safely. All in all, the hotel was good but I wouldn't book through the agent again.

Jul 12, 2025 | Trip type: CouplesWithin walking distance to most of Old City sights, and local street stalls sell freshly cooked dumplings, soups and snacks. Several restaurants on same street with English menus. Hotel room was as advertised, and staff were helpful with limited English.
